Catalogue Essay
The 'Devil's Churn', not to be confused with the 'Devil's Fist', was produced using a very refined and sophisticated technique, encasing numerous air bubbles into the thick body of the vase. The rim of the vase is subsequently finished off-hand, the side pierced with shears and the base polished. The model was included in the Iittala production catalogue for eight years, between 1952 and 1960, but only a few examples are known to exist, one of which is part of the Bischofberger collection, Switzerland.

Phillips wishes to thank Kaisa Koivisto, Chief Curator of The Finnish Glass Museum, for her assistance with the cataloguing of the present lot.
