“I think anything that’s a bit of a rocket up the arse, anything that kicks against the routine, against the mundane things that close down your mind, is a refreshing and good thing” (Tim Noble, quoted in ‘Tim Noble Sue Webster Nihilistic Optimistic New London Exhibition’, Artlyst, 1 September 2012, online).

Internationally acclaimed British artist duo, Tim Noble and Sue Webster, employ a wide range of materials, making a statement against the norms of art and beauty by referencing the kitschy and vulgar aspect of contemporary culture. The pair began their official collaboration in 1996, receiving international recognition for their solo show British Rubbish in London the same year and have since developed a series of ‘Light Works’ as part of their oeuvre, using computer-sequenced light bulbs that communicates the message of consumerism, love and hate.

A neon 'casino' sign at the Fremont Hotel in Downtown Las Vegas.

    Dan Flavin
Untitled (to Don Judd colorist) 5, 1987
At once extravagant and minimal in its execution, Golden Showers is a particularly mesmerising work from Tim Noble and Sue Webster’s most celebrated Light Works series, showcasing a vibrant fountain of saturated light that is illuminated by hundreds of shimmering bulbs. Paying homage to the colourful carnival shows, neon signage and dancing Bellagio fountain that characterise the Las Vegas skyline, whilst also recalling the pioneering methods of esteemed Minimalist artist Dan Flavin, Golden Showers’ animated display of light exquisitely portrays Tim Noble and Sue Webster’s unique marriage of contemporary visual culture and the transcendent nature of fine art. Confronting the viewer with colourful, beaming light and an amusingly brash title, the energetic present work is both glaring and playful in nature, provocatively assaulting the senses in its complex pastiche.

Associated with the post-Young British Artists (YBA) generation, the duo have received significant critical acclaim exhibiting at the 2009 Venice Biennale. Their works are found in the permanent collections of various institutions such as the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; MOCA, Los Angeles; National Portrait Gallery, London.
