Catalogue Essay
The closely cropped figures in United Enemies, A Play in Ten Scenes are based on small-scale macquettes that Schütte created out of Firmo poymer modelling clay, dressed in various fabrics, and bound together with cord before photographing each pair and adding a single white dot of ink to the iris of each eye. In doing so, Schütte not only creates a primary example of how printmaking and sculpture inform one another throughout his work, but also explores the complexity of human relations and the encounters between both friends and foes.
