"Painting is a zombie medium. As a painter you are a little bit like a guy showing up in a tiger suit at a techno party. So your dress code is outdated, but you might still have the best moves on the dancefloor." (Tal R interviewed by Mika Hannula)

Tal R belongs to a group of internationally acclaimed artists who graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in the1990s. Common amongst this group of painters is a focus on expressive and painterly qualities which coalesce with personal and sometimes banal subject matter. His imaginary scenes suggest awkward and puerile narratives of the suburban fairytale. In line with the majority of Tal R's work Fungusia has a vibrant hippy- trippy persona. The viewer's eye is hypnotized into a vortex of magic mushrooms and a stormy sea of colour. The forms and colours play dizzying tricks of perspective resulting in overwhelming giddiness. This effect is only enhanced by the undulating paper collage elements.Tal R's use of a solid band across the bottom of his painting gives citation to the framing of television screens, making the space above an area for creativity. Each painting is similar to a different channel or program.
