  • Catalogue Essay

The twin brothers and artistic collaborators Gert and Uwe Tobias have done more than any other artists to revive and glorify the woodcut as a medium in the contemporary art scene. Building upon a technique which has its origins in 1st century Eastern Asia but only gained artistic significance in the 15th century with Albert Durer, the Romanian brothers oeuvre is largely auto biographical. The expressionistic imagery which lies on the cusp between abstraction and figuration is influenced by a wide variety of sources including the dark mythologies and history of their native Transylvania, modern graphic design and classic Hollywood horror films. The present lot, a large scale boldly coloured untitled work from 2006, has a certain Cubist unity with its harmonious composition of radial and parallel lines and concentric circles.
