  • Catalogue Essay

Executed between 1986 and 1987, the present lot is an exemplary work by the artist belonging to his iconic series Tutto. The series is comprised of woven paintings that explore and present the fusion of different cultural heritages within a singular work. Emerging out of his 1969 idea of fragmentation, Boetti's Tutto is made up of countless abstract and figurative forms, slotted together so as to fill the whole area of the embroidery. For each of the colours the same length of thread is used, leading to an optical effect of total saturation. Designed by the artist, with each iconographic element drawn by his assistants, and woven by people from varying cultures who bring their heritage, outlook and emotions into the work, the work is a symbol of Boetti's nomadism. The present lot is a prime example of Boetti's attempt to embrace the endless variety of the world.
