  • Catalogue Essay

Sharon Core’s restaging of Wayne Thiebaud’s compositions of candy, cakes, sandwichesand other delectable edibles blurs the line between photography and painting. In
recreating the composition in the current lot, Core meticulously baked and cut multiple cakes, then painstakingly matched each slice in size, scale, proportion, angle and lighting to its painted counterpart. By appropriating a pre-existing image, Core added dimensionality and tangibility to Thiebaud’s luscious painterly creations, but only to quickly render them back in a two-dimensional form—a photograph, heightening the cakes’ unattainable existence and subsequent desirability among viewers.
