The original caption for this work reads:
'Republican guards in leave uniforms. They are standing next to a woman wearing a dress called a "grand Dakar" or "robe Samba", because of the stripes. She is wearing a head-scarf tied behind her head and has a toothpick at the corner of her mouth, a small gold ring tied around her neck, plus a cornelian necklace, called "balls of millet porridge" (mòni kuruni), and a silver bracelet (plaki).'
