Catalogue Essay
Throughout the artist’s career, Sergey Dohzd explores the psychological theories of abstraction and how an abstract work can connect with the viewer’s unconscious. Dohzd’s looked to make such a connection by using an abstract technique to ‘cloud the conscious’ and subsequently entice the viewer’s unconscious thought. This style is reminiscent of the works of Kandinksy, who is a major influence of Dohzd’s art, resulting in the artist writing a book on the theory of Sciarsism and the development of Kandisky’s oeuvre. The present lot is an example of this practice, juxtaposing the light, vibrant colours against the dark canvas, creating a sense that the body of the work is floating. While the subject matter of the piece is unclear, the artist’s intent to bypass conscious thought and connect with the unconscious is clearly visible.
