  • Catalogue Essay

Jean Schlumberger was one of the most celebrated jewellery designers of the 20th century, who was best known for the creations he produced during his time at Tiffany & Co., starting from the mid-1950s. He also remains one of the only four jewellers who are permitted to sign their creations for Tiffany & Co. In 1986, the House published a specialty Schlumberger Blue Book, stating ‘Tiffany’s rarest treasure is a genius call Schlumberger.’

Schlumberger most recognizable motifs include exotic birds, flowers, plants and many sea creatures, which he tried to design and ‘make everything look as if it were growing, uneven, at random, organic, in motion’. He combined platinum with soft lines of yellow gold, brought together the most exuberant colours of gemstones and enamels. His talent was recognized by a long list of patrons, including Wallis Simpson, Elizabeth Taylor, Jackie Kennedy, Audrey Hepburn and American philanthropist ‘Bunny’ Mellon, whose collection of over a hundred pieces are permanently on public display in the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in the United States.

This ring is designed as five little diamond-set bees outlining a vibrant Kashmir sapphire in its silky glow, held together by wire work of yellow gold and an open high-dome design, lending it a dramatic presence, unmistakably a Schlumberger creation.
