  • Artist Biography

    Sarah Crowner

    American • 1974

Sarah Crowner is an American painter. Known for her abstract, geometric works, her pieces feature solid fields of color that evoke the style of 1950s hard-edge abstraction. One of the more distinctive elements of Crowner’s practice is the use of sewing to join previously-painted pieces of canvas and linen to create her final works.

Crowner received her Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and her MFA from Hunter College. The Brooklyn-based artist has a permanent installation at the Guggenheim museum and was the subject of a solo exhibition at MASS MoCA in 2016. She was awarded the Rome Prize for visual art in 2019.
