  • American artist Sarah Crowner is celebrated for her diverse art practice that ranges from paintings to ceramics and sculpture. She is best known for her vibrant abstract works that explore the nexus between geometric structure and expressive gesture, material and composition, and the graphic and the handcrafted. Her stitched paintings are constructed by threading together painted and raw canvas fragments using an industrial sewing machine, to simultaneously reveal both the final composition and assembly of its formation.

Reminiscent of the hard-edge abstraction popularised in the 1950s as well as Bridget Riley’s colourful optical patterns (see for example, Rêve (1999)), Crowner’s dynamic paintings convey ideas of connection, opposition, framework, and transformation. Executed in 2018, the present work is an eye-catching example of her exploration into pattern, surface and hue, composed of midnight blue and yellow which immediately draws a connection to the luminous quality of Vincent van Gogh’s The Starry Night (1889).

This work marks the first time Crowner’s work has been offered at auction in Asia, following her debut to the region with Simon Lee Gallery’s solo show in Hong Kong in 2019—which was the same year as Crowner’s inclusion as one of only two artists to be presented by The Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, in the 57th Edition of the Carnegie International. Crowner has more recently been the subject of solo shows hosted by Kayne Griffin in Los Angeles (which has since been acquired by PACE) in 2021; and Casey Kaplan Gallery in New York in 2020-2021.
