Richard Misrach has been documenting the American landscape for the past 40 years, using hiscamera to examine the relationship between man and the physical world around him. In his Onthe Beach series, he captures aerial photographs of figures isolated in the vast expanses of sandand sea. As we see in the present lot, the unusual perspective paired with the lack of a horizonline creates a photograph that speaks- not of one specific place- but of the grand scale of theworld around us. With his oversized and vibrantly colored images, Misrach offers a contemporaryinterpretation of the most classic of photographic subjects.

Misrach's work engages with traditional ideas of the sublime landscape, as their immense beauty engulfs both the subjects in his photographs as well as the viewer.On the Beach, one of Misrach's most famous series, features spectacular aerial images of the sea and beach that convey both the vulnerability and preciousness of life. One of the most pervasive themes present in his work is the relationship between humans and their environment, depicting our impact on the world through feats of engineering as in his Golden Gate Bridge series, and with his Desert Cantos with nuclear testing in the American desert.
