Catalogue Essay
Executed in 1996, Peter Schuyyf’s, Untitled presents a colourful work on canvas that plays on the illusion of geometry and three-dimensional texture. He embodies traditional painterly technique while incorporating psychedelic patterns by building up thin layers of paint. As a Dutch-born American artist, he trained at the Vancouver School of Art and later moved to New York in the early 1980s. Contemporaries such as Ashley Bickerton, Peter Halley and Phillip Taaffe were amongst some who had influence on his body of work, contributing toward the Neo-Geo movement. Schuyff is celebrated in collections at the Modern Museum of Art, New York, the Broad Museum, Los Angeles and most recently at his on-going solo exhibition at White Cube, London.
