  • First exhibited in the Great Hall of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Pat Steir’s Egg #081 results from the artist’s collaboration with the Fabergé Big Egg Hunt in 2014. The artist created the three-foot-tall ovum for the Easter-spirited event in which egg sculptures by various artist were exhibited throughout New York City. The present example was one of three honored with placement in the Great Hall. Steir applies her signature wave brushstrokes to the curved surface, inspired by techniques used in Japanese and Chinese paintings like those found within the Met’s galleries. In the culminating work, a glossy, ocean-hued surface grounds the elegant white drips and gestures that wrap around the three-dimensional form.
