The present coffee service combines the aspirational aesthetic of the Futurists with an everyday, utilitarian objects, producing a design of eccentric and unpredictable shapes and bright colors. This unlikely pairing came about in the mid-1920s when Tullio Mazzotti met Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, author of the “Manifesto of the Futurist Movement.” The Mazzotti family had been ceramicists since 1903 in Albisola, Italy. Tullio d’ Albisola—as he was nicknamed by Marinetti—forged a partnership with the Futurists and began a creative partnership that would prove extremely fruitful with the production of many Futurist ceramics. This coffee service was designed by Nikolay Diulgheroff, a Futurist who had studied at the Bauhaus in Weimar, Germany, where he became interested in design.
