  • Catalogue Essay

This quirky fruit sculpture is one piece of the complexly surreal and colorful world of Nicolas Party. At the time in which this series of sculptures was created Party was part of an artist’s group named Blakam, he paid homage to the inspirational time he spent with them by referencing Blakam in the title of each work. Small sculptures of fruit, cheese and charcuterie are often sprinkled throughout his installations, food and art of dining are themes Party returns to again and again in the form of sculptures and experiences which include his events such as Dinner with Ghosts and Dinner for 24 Elephants. Dinner with Ghosts touched on some debauchery by taking place in an extravagant, historical site made even more fantastical and surreal by Party’s placement of his oversized sculptures. Dinner for 24 Elephants invited guests to enter an environment fully designed by the artist and include many of his familiar motifs and illustrations. The guests consumed a seven-course meal created by the artist which included: an oyster, a fish, a sausage and a poached pear. Each dish was seated on a plate, painted by Party and each guest sat on a stool and at a table painted by Party. The present lot, Blakam’s Stone (Pear) offers a whimsical glimpse into Party’s carefully crafted visual world full of oversized fruits, fairytale forests, Picasso like figures and mischievously cunning animals.
