The tranquillity of the vast Yangtze River is contrasted by the miniaturised human presence, reminding us of the historic connection between the people and this indomitable waterway. An image whose classical references have led Michel Strauss to nickname it Le Déjeuner sur l’herbe, this Sunday picnic is a key work from the Yangtze, The Long River series and showcases Kander’s desire to parallel the insignificance of man with the might of nature. In 2009, Kander won the Prix Pictet for his portfolio submission of Yangzte, The Long River, in which this image featured prominently.
