Catalogue Essay
Michael Riedel’s practice incorporates a wide range of media including canvas, video and installations. He proclaims his artistic practice as “self-sustaining”, as a means to “reintroduce the system of art into the art system.” Riedel has been nicknamed a “photocopying machine”, a title that reflects his amalgamation of disjointed elements onto a single, cohesive canvas. Untitled (16), features Riedel’s distinctive incorporation of microscopic text fragments, justified titles and computer-formatted shapes to form a multi-layered and multifaceted result. Each of his works provides a unique version of a conceptual template: a part of an infinitely continuous sequence of potential artworks.

“The paintings are a bit robotic, maybe. But my art is not as cool and dry as people think, because I have a lot of fun doing it.”
