  • I’m creating a kind of atmosphere, a space of ambiguity
    — Mehdi Ghadyanloo

Best known for his surrealist yet contemplative works, The Eternal Gate is a superlative example of Mehdi Ghadyanloo’s creative output. Taking inspiration from Giorgio de Chirico’s metaphysical paintings, Ghadyanloo’s style is characterised by his masterful ability in capturing the contrast between lightness and darkness through his implementation of the chiaroscuro technique. In 2019, the present work was featured in Ghadyanloo’s solo exhibition Portals of Light at Galleri Golsa in Oslo. As the title of the exhibition suggests, the artist’s works from this series convey a glimmer of hope via the ‘portals of light’.

Devoid of figures in most of his works, the artist typically renders his utopian compositions with the simple structure of four walls and injects everyday objects from his daily encounters as his main focal point. Through Ghadyanloo’s wholly unique approach to art making, he probes notions of memories – specifically harkening back to the small and dimly lit cubic rooms to which his family took refuge during the Iran-Iraq war. Upon close observation, his works interrogate universal human emotions such as fear, loss, and hope.

Replete with suspense, the present work features a solitary ladder enclosed within a shallow and confined box, illuminated from above by ocular skylights. The box serves as a powerful trompe-l’oeil, acting as a deliberate trick to the eye and inviting viewers into the depths of its seemingly three-dimensional cubic form. Although evoking a sense of claustrophobia, the present work features a small yet expansive oculus allowing a beam of light to shine through – transporting viewers to a realm of unlimited imagination. The interplay between light and shadow rendered within The Eternal Gate further recalls the architectural masterpiece Concrete Dreams by Japanese artist Tadao Ando, displayed permanently at the Chateau La Coste.

Ghadyanloo was primarily known for his large number of public mural paintings that he created across Tehran between 2004 to 2011. Since then, he has gained critical acclaim for his illusionistic canvas paintings that display a plethora of new motifs. Born 1981 in Iran, the artist received his bachelor’s degree in fine arts from Tehran University in 2005. Ghadyanloo’s other notable achievements include his Spaces of Hope mural at the Rose Kennedy Greenway in Boston and in 2016, he was the first artist since 1979 to have received official commissions in both Iran and the United States. Most recently in 2022, the artist was honoured with his first solo show in Asia at Gagosian, Hong Kong.
