Enamoured by pop culture cartoons and their vivid colours, bold lines, and accessibility, Los Angeles-based artist Matt Gondek is known for his ‘Deconstructed Pop Icons’ series. Seeking to reflect the value of pop culture and day to day life, Gondek re-appropriates these pop icons in his work, as he borrows the graphic elements of popular cartoon franchise characters and transforms them into action-packed paintings, sculptures and designer toys.
“I grew up with these characters and imagery pounded into my brain on a daily basis. How could I ignore them when finding my voice?”
