This work is a wonderful example of Matt Black’s intense and poetic series American Geography, published as a book in 2020. As a pioneer of contemporary social documentary photography, Black has developed a distinctive graphic style through which he captures America’s most marginalised communities.

During his acclaimed career, US-born photographer Matt Black (b.1970) has received many awards, including the W. Eugene Smith Award (2015), the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award (2016) and a Robert F. Kennedy Award for his work in Puerto Rico (2018). He was named a Senior Fellow at the Emerson Collective in 2016 and his work has also been honoured by the Magnum Foundation Emergency Fund, the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, the Center for Cultural Innovation, and others.
