Catalogue Essay
Mary Ramsden’s abstract compositions merge organic and hard-edged minimalist forms with bold uniformed colouring, creating sumptuous marriages of form and colour. Painted in the same year that Ramsden graduated from the Royal Academy, Lean 3 is an vibrant example of the artist’s experimentation with compositional unity, twisting and turning geometric forms to create torsion and static within her paintings. Geometric in form, Ramsden’s palette transports us into nature, with sandy organic planes edged to the corners by a central large expanse of blue, evocative of the sea and sky. With her first solo museum exhibition held at Aspen Art Museum in 2016, Ramsden’s work has been celebrated on an international stage, with her current show ZORRO being exhibited at Pilar Corrias, London, until August 2019.
