Online Bidding Guide >

\n\n

The countdown timer above indicates when the first lot in the sale will close. Each subsequent lot will close one minute after the preceding lot. If a bid is placed in the final three minutes of bidding time on a lot, there will be a bidding extension of 3 minutes, so that there will always a be 3-minute period between the last bid placed and the closing time of that lot. These extensions will continue indefinitely until there is no more bidding activity on the lot for a period of 3 minutes. The extension of one lot's closing time does not affect the closing times of other lots in the Online Only sale, so it is possible that lots will close out of numerical order.

\n\n

Claire Tabouret My Waves, 2019.

\n\n

LA-based French artist Claire Tabouret uses the body as her main subject to ruminate on vulnerability in human relationships and the passing of time. In this work, one of my favorites in the sale, the artist explores the ebb and flow of desire using the constant movement of the water as a metaphor for the ever-changing tides of romantic attachment. Tabouret’s transparent and fluid layering of color washes creates this luminous, dreamlike composition of a couple wading through a body of water, the details of their reflection within the rippling surface silently conveying waves of emotional and psychological depth.

\n\n

\n\n

Katherine Bernhardt Fake Love, 2019.

\n\n

The present lot references one of Brooklyn-based artist Katherine Bernhardt's favourite cartoon-character icons, the Pink Panther. Rendered in fluorescent magenta and outlined in metallic gold, a pair of panthers are framed by the logos of the ubiquitous messaging app Whatsapp. Perhaps alluding to the search for a real connection in an age dominated by text messaging and social media (hence the title), underneath Bernhardt’s electric colours and playful aesthetics is a reflection and commentary of present day contemporary culture.

\n\n

Graff A Pair of Sapphire And Diamond “Carissa” Ear Pendants.

\n\n

The Greek name for "beloved," the Carissa flower has long been translated by Graff into a range of jewelry designs spanning necklaces, earrings and bracelets. These ear pendants are made up of an arrangement of pear-shaped and marquise gemstones totaling 10.10 carats, and I love how the vivid blue of the sapphires creates an image of cascading blossoms. Not only is this luxuriously elegant, but the graphic quality of the floral design also adds a touch of whimsy.

A Jadeite Cabochon and Diamond Ring.

\n\n

This ring is set with a thick-domed oval jadeite cabochon of even, brilliant emerald green color and high translucency with a fine texture. With a stylized mount set with rose-cut and brilliant-cut diamonds, the cabochon’s watery luster is contrasted with the scintillating fire of the white stones, heightening the elegance and beauty of natural jadeite.

\n\n

\n\n

Margherita Burgener A Pair of Amethyst, Colored Sapphire and Diamond Ear Clips.

\n\n

Each of these Margherita Burgener earrings presents as an individual, contemporary, lightweight circular-hoop set with pink sapphire and amethyst. Titanium is an incredible fusion of lightweight strength that will not tarnish and is very easy to wear. The pink and purple colors make this pair of earrings charming for daily wear!

\n\n

\n\n

A very fine and rare blackened titanium wristwatch with certificate and box, made in collaboration with KAWS, designed by Marc Newson.

\n\n

This watch was reconceptualized by KAWS in 2012, with the popular model of his signature circle teeth motif emblazoned across the black dial, while the hands are shaped in his trademark “X Eye” motif. Ikepod’s iconic pebble-shaped water-resistant case is coated in black titanium. This watch captures KAWS’s style in an understated and playful way. In addition to the X on the dial, there are double X markings on the rubber strap near the special Ikepod clasp.

Blancpain Air Command A fine, attractive and well-preserved limited edition stainless steel flyback chronograph wristwatch.

\n\n

Originally from the 1950s, the Blancpain Air Command is one of the most sought-after chronograph timepieces from the aforementioned era, initially designed for the U.S Military. We sold a beautiful original example from the 1950s at our Phillips & Blackbird: SPORTS 2019 auction (Lot 814) for a world record. In the same year, Blancpain launched the reedition of the fathomed model and was executed to perfection and in my humble opinion, it is the best new edition of a timepiece in recent times. The present example offered is presented in “New old stock” condition.

\n\n

\n\n

Rolex Submariner ref. 16610LV “Kermit, Flat Four”.

\n\n

The “Kermit, Flat Four” is with no doubt one of the most iconic sports wristwatches of our time. Launched to celebrate the 50^th anniversary of the Rolex Submariner in 2003, only examples produced in the first year bears a “flat four” bezel insert, making early examples rare. Highly sought after by connoisseurs, the present example from circa 2003 bearing an “F” serial is further enhanced by its excellent overall condition with an unpolished case and accompanied by the full set of accessories.

\n\n

Josh Sperling Red Squiggle, 2015.

\n\n

New York-based artist Josh Sperling has established a name for himself for his unique practice that blurs the lines between painting and sculpture. Although Sperling’s signature geometric compositions have a distinctive graphic immediacy, his visual vocabulary of abstract forms through shaped canvases and saturated colors evokes a dynamic quality that draws viewers in. He is an artist that I recently came to know about through a friend and has captivated my attention ever since.

","An Interview with Asia Art Archives' Claire Hsu","

\n\n

Claire Hsu founded Asia Art Archive in 2000, as part of an effort to document and preserve valuable art historical knowledge from the region as a whole. Over the past two decades, the organization has built a dedicated community through events, scholarship, grants and residencies, all of which have made Asia Art Archive a leading arts charity in Hong Kong and beyond. Phillips is proud to support Asia Art Archive, particularly in this uncertain time, and will be donating all net proceeds from the online sale of Wolfgang Tillmans' Sahara Reflex, 2018, to the organization. We sat down with Claire to learn more about her organization's mission and growth over the last 20 years.

\n\n

\n\n

Asia Art Archive founder Claire Hsu.

\n\n

PHILLIPS: Why did you found Asia Art Archive? What did you hope it would add to the art historical discourse at large?

\n\n

CLAIRE HSU: In 1999 while doing my Masters in Art History at the School of Oriental and African Studies it soon became clear that the unprecedented events happening in the art scene in China were not being addressed in classrooms, nor public art institutions. I was fortunate to intern with Johnson Chang who was an incredible resource for my research and in conversation we decided that it essential a not-for-profit organization be set up to record, share and make sense of the recent history of art from Asia. I moved back to Hong Kong from London in 2000 and that's what I and a lot of incredible other people have been doing since.

\n\n

\n\n

\n\n

P: This year is Asia Art Archive’s 20th anniversary. What are some of your proudest accomplishments over those two decades? Have you found that the organization’s mission has changed at all in that time?

\n\n

CH: The mission of AAA has not changed over time, if anything it has become better articulated to address the many gaps within the writing of art history globally. Our greatest achievements have been to grow and activate a digital and physical collection of material recording the often invisible voices within the art scene that is 100% free and accessible to all. The idea of generosity is at the core of what we do, and the generosity of the community throughout these past two decades is the reason we have been able to not only survive, but to grow and flourish. The fact that AAA is used in high schools across Hong Kong, and university art history classrooms across the world, as well as the friendships and partnerships we have grown is what keeps us motivated on a daily basis.

\n\n

\n\n

Wolfgang Tillmans Sahara Reflex, 2018. Estimate: HKD50,000-70,000. Offered in REFRESH:RELOAD.

\n\n

P: How is your home base of Hong Kong influence Asia Art Archive? What is unique about being in that particular city?

\n\n

CH: Hong Kong’s geographic position in South China, recent history as a British colony and even more recent history as a special administrative region of China, provides us with many different lenses from which to see the world. Hong Kong is a generous place and the community is willing to come together to support organizations like Asia Art Archive.

\n\n

\n\n

P: How, if at all, have your goals or priorities for 2020 shifted under the global challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic?

\n\n

CH: It has been a time to slow down, listen and reflect on the responsibilities we have as custodians of this incredible collection - to ensure that it can continue to grow and be shared in the public domain. The pandemic has also made clear how much of our work is still possible in the digital realm as AAA’s model is in fact very digitally orientated and this is an area we will continue to grow.

\n\n

It has also been a time to closely examine how we allocate resources and to ensure we prioritize work that is core to our mission. It is going to be a bumpy financial journey ahead and so while we have good governance in place, donations like this are crucial to our work. So thank you!

\n\n

P: Looking ahead, are there any future projects that you’d like to share with us?

\n\n

CH: As we mark our 20th anniversary between now and Spring 2021, we investigate and pay tribute to the many teachers and schools that have contributed to what we think of as contemporary art from Asia. Through a series of public programs called Life Lessons, we will look into different models of education led by artists. We ask what some of the most influential things they learned have been and how they have passed on this knowledge to others. Given the current crisis, there has never been a better time to come together to imagine new ways of being and learning together.
