As a teenager, I enjoyed reading Japanese schoolgirl magazines. On Valentine’s Day, these magazines showed girls giving their crushes cute confections that felt really special. They professed their feelings, and I was envious because high school life was so boring in comparison to these fantasies. I wanted to be like the girls in the magazines. The girl in this piece represents all the love, gifts, and feelings that Valentine’s day represented for me, that I had to keep contained inside.

\n\n

With this piece, I wanted to capture the sweetness of youth: a yearning to give and confess feelings of love and care for another.

About Lili Tae

\n\n

Lili Tae is an illustrator based in Bangkok, Thailand. Drawing inspiration from her subconscious mind, she transfers her experiences through mellow strokes and soothing yet vibrant colours. After receiving her bachelor's degree in communication design, she worked as a graphic designer and was selected as one of the Thai artists to exhibit at Unknown Asia in Osaka in 2017. With an overwhelming response to her work, Lili had her first solo exhibition in Osaka in 2018 and returned to school to receive her master's degree in illustration/sequential design from Brighton, United Kingdom, and now works as an independent illustrator. Since entering the NFT space, she’s seen a growing demand for her work.

This Lot is sold subject to the Online-Only Auction Conditions of Sale, Hong Kong, the Additional Conditions of Sale applicable to NFT Lots and the Additional Conditions of Sale applicable to Cryptocurrency Payments, in addition to the following supplemental terms:

The artist has created a full resolution media file comprising the digital artwork asset identified by the NFT to accompany the NFT (the “Media File”). Note that the Media File is not part of this Lot and is not covered by Phillips’ Authorship Warranty. Phillips makes no representations or warranties about the Media File including but not limited to its nature, condition, description, uniqueness, functionality, compatibility, durability, or the availability of this Media File, either now or in the future, or that it will function in the manner the artist intended.

The Buyer may request in writing, for Phillips to provide a download link for the Buyer to download the Media File. Buyer’s written notice must be received by Phillips within 30 days from the end date of the Online Auction. Phillips will only arrange and provide the download link to the Buyer upon Phillips’ receipt of full payment of the Lot’s Purchase Price.

Phillips will not be responsible to Buyer at any time for any loss or damage to the Media File.

In what currency will I be bidding?

\n\n

The auction will be conducted and invoiced in Hong Kong dollars (HKD).

\n\n

What forms of payment are accepted?

\n\n

You can pay for an NFT Lot in HKD or in one of the cryptocurrencies accepted by Phillips (Bitcoin or Ether). If you wish to pay for an NFT Lot in Bitcoin or Ether you must satisfy the Cryptocurrency Conditions set out in our Additional Conditions of Sale applicable to Cryptocurrency Payments.

\n\n

You acknowledge and agree that the price of Bitcoin and Ether can be volatile and subject to upward and downward movements. You acknowledge that the conversion rate between these Accepted Cryptocurrencies and HKD will change during and after the auction until the Lot is paid for. Phillips does not offer cryptocurrency conversion functionality during the auction. Bidders are responsible for making their own currency conversion calculations when bidding in the auction.

How much will I have to pay?

\n\n

If you are the successful bidder on an NFT Lot, you must pay the total purchase price for the Lot (calculated as described in the Conditions of Sale for the Online-Only Auction) plus network and other fees required to transfer the NFT to your Digital Wallet).

\n\n

If you elect to pay for an NFT Lot in an accepted cryptocurrency (Ether or Bitcoin) and satisfy our Cryptocurrency Conditions (see above), the HKD purchase price as shown on your invoice will be converted automatically into the applicable accepted cryptocurrency using the Coinbase Commerce rates of exchange at the time the buyer accesses the Coinbase Commerce platform to make payment using the QR code or link we will issue to you.

Are resale royalties payable to the artist on re-sales of the NFT?

\n\n

If resale royalties are payable to the artist on subsequent resales of the NFT, this will be stipulated in the NFT Lot’s smart contract. Where they exist, re-sale royalties will be a percentage of the re-sale price of the NFT. It is therefore important that you review (or seek professional help to review) and understand the operation of the NFT’s smart contract (including any rights and restrictions contained in the smart contract) before bidding.

\n\n

Depending on where the NFT Lot is re-sold, additional artist resale royalties and transaction duties may apply to the transaction under applicable law. These would be additional to and not in substitution for any resale royalties imposed by the NFT’s smart contract.

Maciej Kuciara grew up in Poland watching cyberpunk anime on VHS tapes. Lili Tae traded Japanese magazines and sweets with friends as a teenager in bustling 2000s Bangkok. While both artists came of age in different worlds, both found inspiration in Japanese animation. Their digital works are part of our themed online sale My Kawaii Valentine.

\n\n

Kuciara, a renowned digital artist and director, has produced concept art for the Last of Us game series, Captain America: Civil War, the Avengers movie series, and Rupert Sanders’ Ghost in the Shell. For our sale, he has chosen Her Body is Metal, the second NFT from his long-form narrative series Showtime Universe about a highly cybernetic vision of the future.

\n\n

Tae is a Bangkok-based illustrator who was selected as one of the Thai artists to exhibit at Unknown Asia in Osaka in 2017. She had her first solo exhibition in the same city the following year. Her works are a soothing mixture of mellow strokes and vibrant colors. Since entering the NFT space, Tae has seen growing demand for her work.

\n\n

We sat down with both artists to discuss their work and how technology has influenced their creative process.

\n\n

PHILLIPS: Maciej, can you explain the relationship between Her Body is Metal and your long-form narrative Showtime Universe?

\n\n

MACIEJ KUCIARA: Her Body is Metal is an introduction to one of the main protagonists in Showtime Universe. The animation, alongside the written narrative, gives intimate insight into what it’s like to be living in this cyberpunk world and foreshadows how the story will reveal itself over time. It’s meant to create a standalone lens through which we can interpret technologies and AI’s impact on human nature, which is one of the main themes of Showtime Universe.

\n\n

P: Can you elaborate on those themes? How do they respond to some of our anxieties surrounding technology?

\n\n

MK: The best way to describe Showtime Universe is to imagine current-age problems of human nature and how they would manifest if they were hyper-accelerated by cybernetic technology and AI. It’s a vision of the world in which tech-driven amplified themes of human emotion, psychology, conflict, self-interest and complexity of decisions often lead to unforeseen results. What would love look like if dopamine were regulated by cybernetic bodies? How would information travel if it were entirely created by self-interested artificial intelligence? How would conflicts be resolved in a world where everyone’s body is a weapon?

P: What drew you to the cyperpunk anime style? Who are some of your influences?

\n\n

MK: Growing up in the era of VHS tapes, the first real art I was exposed to was ‘90s cyberpunk anime — Ghost in the Shell, Akira, Cowboy Bebop and more — which inspired and drove my artistic career. Anime opened a door into sci-fi worlds that I fell in love with. It made me discover fantastic worlds that I never dreamt of. I knew then and there that I wanted to make art and build my own universes with the goal to one day match the quality and depth delivered by the artistic masters I admired. It has been my lifelong pursuit for artistic excellence.

P: Lili, similarly, how did the environment in which you grew up influence your work?

\n\n

Lili Tae: I grew up in a Thai-Chinese household, where there was Chinese-style furniture, decorations and books with Asian prints around the house. I doodled a lot as a child, and this is one of the environments that inspired my style as I grew up.

\n\n

Another environment that I feel has influenced me a lot is fashion design. When I was young, I would wait for my aunt, who worked as a fashion brand manager, at her workplace after school. So I got to spend many hours looking at various fashion design collections back in the day.

\n\n

P: There are a lot of sweets, especially Japanese candies and cookies, in your piece. Can you explain some of these references?

\n\n

LT: For this piece, I was inspired by my surroundings during the 2000s. Japanese pop culture was very big in Thailand, and I was a teenager during that time, so I would say I grew up surrounded by everything Japanese. I remember watching anime every Saturday and Sunday morning, waiting for a Thai-translated Japanese magazine to come out and bringing cute, yummy Japanese candies to school. My conversations with friends were mostly related to Japanese culture.

\n\n

I find Japanese pop culture very refreshing. I was born and raised in Bangkok, which is a big city, but visiting Tokyo is even more overwhelming. I love how versatile things are in Japan and after taking in those elements throughout the years, that inspired my art and style through today.

The candies in this piece are mostly inspired by what I remember having since childhood. Some of them are imaginary, and some might be familiar to people as some of the most popular Japanese sweets. I want people to be able to relate to this piece when they find a treat they know or have tried before. The shapes and forms are so unique that some might spot them right away, and I think that’s fun, almost like a photo hunt.

\n\n

P: With what medium did you start, and how did you expand into the digital realm and NFTs?

\n\n

LT: My work used to be detailed black ink on white paper. I personally like colors a lot, but I struggled with the process of painting. I only worked with ink because I thought it was what I did best, but it limited my creativity and I couldn’t fully translate what I had in mind, so I started making digital art. I experimented with colors and composition, and I have so much fun creating art when there are more possibilities.

\n\n

I created a lot of personal projects, so at first, I treated the NFT format as a portfolio where I could display and expand my work onto platforms apart from social media. The growth of this community has given me many different opportunities and allowed me to create fun projects with many different people from all over the world.

富藝斯：賽博朋克動漫風格當初如何吸引到你？誰人對你影響尤其深遠？

\n\n

MK：我在VHS錄影帶的時代長大，首次接觸的真正藝術正是1990年代的賽博朋克動畫，包括：《攻殼機動隊》、《亞基拉》、《賞金獵人》等，其後更啟發和推動我的藝術生涯。動漫打開了一扇通往科幻世界的大門，令我發現夢寐以求的奇妙世界。我當下知道，我希望創作藝術，建立自己的宇宙。我的目標是有朝一日，個人作品質量和深度能與我所欽佩的藝術大師媲美，而這一直是我對卓越藝術的畢生追求。

富藝斯：承接上述問題，Lili，成長環境如何影響你的作品？

\n\n

Lili Tae：我在一個泰籍華裔家庭長大，家裡佈滿華人家具、裝飾和富有亞洲色彩的書籍等。我小時候經常塗鴉亂畫，也是成長過程中啟發個人風格的環境之一。

\n\n

另一個對我影響深遠的環境是時裝設計。小時候放學後，我會找擔任時尚品牌經理的阿姨，在其工作場所等侯她。因此，我過去也有不少時間查看各種時裝設計系列。

\n\n

富藝斯：你的作品充滿甜點，尤其是日式糖果和餅乾，可以解釋這些參考嗎？

\n\n

LT：我受到2000年代氛圍的啟發而創作這件作品。當時，日本流行文化在泰國非常盛行。那段時期，我還是青少年，所以我會說我是在一個濃厚日本文化環境中長大。我記得，當年每逢周末早上，我都在觀賞動漫，等待日本雜誌的泰文翻譯本，把可愛又美味的日本糖果帶到學校，而我和朋友的談話亦大多與日本文化有關。

我認為日本的流行文化令人耳目一新。我在曼谷出生和長大，而曼谷也算是一個大城市。然而，當到訪東京後，我才感受到「大城市」的壓迫，讓我更欣賞日本的多樣性。經過多年累積吸收這些元素，時至今日，它們依然啟發著我的藝術和風格。

這件作品的糖果主要受到我的童年回憶所啟發，其中部分為虛構，部分可能是大眾熟悉的受歡迎日式甜點。我希望觀者每當找到熟悉甜點之時，皆能與這件作品連繫。這些糖果的形狀和形態十分獨特，部分觀者甚至可能當下認出它們。我認為這個過程非常有趣，就像在玩「找不同」遊戲一樣。

富藝斯：你當初用甚麼媒材創作？如何擴展到數碼和NFT的領域？

\n\n

LT：有段時間，我傾向在白紙上以黑墨仔細作畫。我本人偏好色彩，但我在繪畫過程中對於顏色運用非常掙扎，致使我只用水墨，因為我認為這是自己最擅長的媒材。然而，它限制了我的創意，令我無法完全傳譯個人想法，所以我開始製作數碼藝術，也嘗試了多種顏色和構圖。當更多可能性出現時，我更為享受創作藝術的樂趣。

其後，我創建了不少個人項目。一開始，我將NFT視為作品形式之一，可以在社交媒體以外的平台展示我的作品，擴大觀眾層面。這個社群的發展給我不同機會，讓我可以與來自世界各地的人一起製作趣味相投的項目。
