Catalogue Essay
In her series Sorry, No Vacancy, Kourtney Roy imagines a parallel universe inhabited by the characters she herself portrays. Here, an unusual drama unfolds: set against the vast Texas wilderness, a woman stands on the side of an open highway, holding an old-fashioned vacuum to the ground with its cable trailing behind her. With her sleek yet offbeat style, Roy constructs mysterious scenarios that provide no fixed or clear meaning as seen in the present work. Inspired by cinema and film stills, Roy seamlessly blends the real with artifice to create her images, transporting us to another place and time. Nominated for the 2014 Prix de l’Elysée by the Musée de l’Elysée, Paris-based Roy has exhibited internationally, including her 2018 solo show The Dreamers at Le Château d'Eau, Pôle Photographique de Toulouse. Her work resides in such prominent institutions as the Maison Européen de la Photographie, Paris and the Musée de l'Elysée, Lausanne.
