  • “You can’t plan fun out because then it’s not so much fun anymore. The spontaneity when you just don’t know what’s going to happen, that’s what’s fun.”
    — Kenny Scharf

Born in 1958 in Los Angeles, California, painter and installation artist Kenny Scharf grew up in the post-World War II culture of Southern California. He was influenced by television culture, cartoon imagery, and the optimism of the 1960s. Scharf moved to New York City in the late 1970s and obtained his bachelor’s degree from the School of Visual Arts. In New York, he became friends with artists Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Together, they were pivotal figures in the East Village art scene, creating work that was edgy, vibrant, and deeply influenced by street culture, pop culture, and the burgeoning hip-hop movement. Calling himself a ‘pop surrealist’, Scharf often blends mid-century American pop culture and comic books with 20th-century art movements including as Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism. Scharf’s art is therefore a melting pot of influences, and he is currently based in Los Angeles.

Sold by Phillips New York for $292,100, 16 May 2023

On the right side of Learning About Women, a female model with no facial features is entangled by blue vines attached to a balloon-like object which appears in front of a real lady on the far left. The balloon also matches with the one laid on top of the model’s head. It is as if the balloon is sending information about the lady to the model so that it can construct itself into women by learning about them, as the title suggests. The nine sentences in the centre of the image are expressed in two versions. Words shown in parentheses are possibly spoken by the model as they are merely imitations of sounds with no significant meanings.

Learning About Women was made in 1988, three years after Scharf’s pivotal participation in the 1985 Whitey Biennial which marked the beginning of his thirty-year international career. Released in June 2021 across various online streaming platforms, the documentary Kenny Scharf: When Worlds Collide shows Scharf’s arrival in New York City in the early 1980s and how he became a pop art phenomenon. Most recently, Scharf also collaborated with the iconic fashion house Dior for their Fall 2021 collection, bringing his comical style to the high fashion world. Scharf’s works created in the 1980s are among his highest selling prices at auctions.
