Catalogue Essay
Brooklyn-based, contemporary artist José Parlá aptly defines his artistic practice as "lying between the boundary of abstraction and calligraphy." Referencing Cy Twombly, Lee Krasner, Jackson Pollock and Joan Mitchell as his influencers he creates a visual language through the use of his precise mark making. He describes his work as “linguistic art” and explained that “with writing and the creation of a personal style of lettering, one shows individualism, and that was attractive to me.”
