Executed in 2016, Untitled is a compelling example from American contemporary artist Josh Sperling’s instantly identifiable oeuvre that traverses both the worlds of art and design. Composed of two spiralling shades of vibrant blue, the viewer is immersed into an almost rhythmic momentum as the energetic work appears simultaneously calculated and impulsive. Relying firstly on graphic design software to digitally compose his sprawling abstract forms, Sperling then turns to the medium of three-dimensional plywood covered with canvas and acrylic to masterfully fabricate his concepts. Nodding to a wide variety of influences that range from the playful aesthetic of Keith Haring, to popular culture references such as MTV logos, as well as the language of minimalist paintings from the 60s and 70s, Sperling’s meticulously conceived works intrigue in their three-dimensionality as they live in a curious space between painting and sculpture.
Represented by Galerie Perrotin, Sperling been honoured with numerous solo exhibitions around the globe. In 2019, this included at their venues in Paris, Tokyo, and New York. Scheduled between 10 November 2020 – 16 January 2021, Sperling’s upcoming solo show at Galerie Perrotin, Shanghai, only further highlights upon the artist’s now widely celebrated international acclaim.
