The internationally acclaimed American artist Josh Sperling keenly navigates the boundaries between art and design, image and space. Revitalising the legacies of artists like Frank Stella, Ron Gorchov, and Tom Wesselmann, who explored spatial potential in painting, Sperling stylistically employs shaped canvases and functional objects. Initially conceived digitally, these sculptural works are then smoothly finished with glossy layers of acrylic, inviting viewers to engage with the interplay of dimensionalities between virtuality and reality. Executed in 2020, the current lot Double Bubble M is a captivating example of Sperling’s distinctive practice. On a grid structure composed of repetitive circular patterns, he creates rhythmic depth and vibrant colour fields in varying shades of pink that meet and bounce against one another. Achieving delightful vibrance and dynamism from simple formal components, Sperling draws on a vocabulary of minimalism and abstraction reminiscent of Keith Haring and his contemporaries, while embracing pop aesthetics that celebrate superficiality and sensory joy. His work presents a unique medley of visual tensions between graphicness and tangibility, as well as simplicity and versatility.
Represented by Galerie Perrotin, Josh Sperling has exhibited worldwide. His works have been collected by prestigious collections, including the Foundation Louis Vuitton, Paris, Arsenal Contemporary, Montreal, and the Rockbund Art Museum, Shanghai, Powerlong Museum, Shanghai, and Longlati Foundation, Hong Kong. His most recent solo exhibition Wonder is currently on view at Paradise Art Space in Incheon and will run through January 31, 2025.
