Catalogue Essay
‘Forgotten by a government that hardly felt as their own,’ Jehad Nga explains, ‘Kenya’s Turkana tribe is withering in number as a drought devastates the Horn of Africa.’ It was with this in mind that Nga created his striking Turkana portraits. The present lot follows Nga’s politically charged aesthetic in its depiction of the hardship faced by this tribe whose livelihood has been threatened by severe droughts and malnutrition. Nga’s approach to documentary photography uncovers the individuals behind the tragedy and is intensified through his dramatic use of light and shadow. The intense focus on the sitter removes the tribe’s geographical context, one of the world’s most barren and severe landscapes.
