Self-trained French designer Hubert le Gall often takes a sculptural approach to his design practice and frequently works with bronze, as seen in the present lot. Describing his interest in this material, le Gall has said, “It’s because bronze is easy to use: it’s malleable, you can melt it, patinate it, carve it. It’s also the medium of the sculptor. It’s true that it’s one of my favorite materials.” His designs often nod to Surrealist and mid-twentieth century French design but he imbues his designs with a contemporary bend. Le Gall received immediate acclaim for his limited-edition series of Daisy flower tables, to which the present lot belongs, which were inspired in part by his interest in Andy Warhol’s Daisy prints. Describing this source of inspiration and his interest in the history of design, le Gall has said, “I was interested in the idea of: what was the flower of my time? There is the flower of the 18th century, of Art Nouveau, and Art Deco. I decided that the flower of my time was the flower of Andy Warhol—the printed flower paintings.” Le Gall created various versions of daisy tables, including the present lot which features the Edelweiss flower. The present table maintains a sense of whimsy and delicacy despite its impossibly rigid flower stems and stretches the arbitrary distinctions between art and design.
