Catalogue Essay
Le Fils de l’Arétin is a drama in four acts by Henri de Bornier which opened at the Comédie-Française in 1895. Eva Lavallière (Eugénie Marie Pascaline Fénoglio) was an actress and particularly renowned for her voice with a very wide range that she used in the operetta register. She never appreciated the caricatures that Lautrec made of her. '…he represented Marcelle Lender, his current infatuation, rather than Le Bargy and Mounet-Sully who had been critically acclaimed in the leading roles.' Richard Thomson Observations on the Themes of Toulouse-Lautrec’s Prints, in Wittrock, vol. 1, p. 29
