Shade Tree VI is exemplary of Brooklyn-based artist Graham Collins' celebrated, ongoing series of monochromatic canvases that are framed with salvaged wood and partially obscured by tinted glass, together creating a raw and refined composition. In these works, Collins' appreciation for normative craft forms and abstraction are expertly combined to create a harmony between otherwise disparate material elements and aesthetics; while at first eschewing a minimalist effect, upon closer inspection the viewer is presented with a plethora of organic and shimmering textures. Collins’ varied oeuvre includes painting, architecture and sculpture, united by the artist’s preoccupation with the juxtaposition of ruin and stability and his focus on the physicality of his works beyond his artistic intervention.
