  • Gizela Mickiewicz is a Polish artist based in Warsaw. Since graduating from the University of the Arts Poznań in 2012, she has completed residencies at Gasworks in London and Triangle in New York. She has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions, including at L21 in Mallorca, at Galeria Stereo in Warsaw, and at Lucas Hirsch in Dusseldorf.

As an artist she is interested in the artwork as both a physical object and an ethereal concept - her work is at once transcendental and tactile. I know about it but I don’t know it, from 2017, presents a subtle yet conceptual materiality. The work has a soft gesso-like quality, like a papier-mache sculpture which could crumble at any moment. This delicate fragility, perhaps a form of self portrait or self reflection, is offset on closer inspection by a steely grit - a silent pronouncement of the work’s metal components. As betrayed by the title, the work is both simple yet perplexing; it invites you in but never quite closes the door behind you.
