Catalogue Essay
Rouault was one of the first artists of the early 20th century to translate his heavily-contoured, colorful Fauvist paintings into richly-inked, painterly aquatints with master printer Roger Lacourière.
Automne is Rouault's tour-de-force print and amongst his most colorful, technically complex and largest. It is also a precursor to the large aquatints by Picasso and Matisse made later in the 1950s and 1960s with the master printmaker.
