Gio Ponti, Desk and chair with integrated ‘Parete attrezzata,' 1950s. Estimate £15,000 - 20,000. Design London.

\n\n

Even today, more than half a century after its invention, Gio Ponti’s bedroom suite feels exquisitely modern. The oak is warm and inviting; the manipulation of geometry is sharp and energetic. Its three distinct units—the bed, wardrobe, and desk areas—combine Ponti’s technical achievements and structural mastery with a deep understanding of space and perception. But among the bedroom suite’s close relations—beyond the rationalist interiors, beyond the organizational theories of the twentieth century—is the Renaissance studiolo.

\n\n

\n\n

Designed by Francesco di Giorgio, executed by Giuliano da Majano, Studiolo from the Ducal Palace in Gubbio, c. 1478–82. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

\n\n

The studiolo was a secluded space with both private and public applications that became popular in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. It was the precursor to the study, a room of quiet contemplation and reflection, safe from the bustle of courtly life. In a 1513 letter to a friend, Niccolò Machiavelli described shedding his public self at the door of his studiolo and, in his subsequent intellectual meanderings, communing with the past. “I return home and go to my study; at the entrance I pull off my peasant-clothes,” he wrote. “And thus becomingly re-clothed I pass into the ancient courts of the men of old.”

\n\n

\n\n

Gio Ponti, Illuminated wardrobe with integrated ‘Parete attrezzata’ and stool, 1950s. Estimate £10,000 - 15,000. Design London.

\n\n

Likewise, as Brian Kish, curator and specialist in 20th Century Italian Design, explains in the auction catalogue, Gio Ponti’s bedroom suite was a “space to rest and wonder.” The elegantly functional room was designed with absolute attention to what would enchant and enliven a domestic space, making it a comfortable and enriching retreat. Cleverly adapted to the needs of everyday life, the cabinets hug the corners of the room; a wood panel contains a frame ripe for a mirror’s insertion; shelves project themselves accessibly and gracefully; every attention has been made for a symmetrical, harmonious configuration. Even the material denotes comfort. As Kish notes, the oak has warmth that “imparts…its symbolic meanings of strength and knowledge.”

\n\n

\n\n

Gio Ponti, Bed with integrated ‘Parete attrezzata,' 1950s. Estimate £12,000 - 18,000. Design London.

\n\n

In their technique, both the studiolo and the bedroom suite bring out the natural textures of their materials, playing with geometry and illusion. As much it as may have been used for quiet meditation, its perception as a place of intellectual expansiveness—and material lavishness—was just as important. One of the most extraordinary surviving studioli is the studiolo from the Ducal Palace in Gubbio reconstructed at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The illusionistic space is fabricated with an intarsia technique, demonstrating an incredible virtuosity in imitating the natural world—from the lattice-worked cabinets to the shadows of the objects they “contain.”

\n\n

\n\n

Gio Ponti, Desk and chair with integrated ‘Parete attrezzata' (detail),1950s. Estimate £15,000 - 20,000. Design London.

\n\n

Working within this exacting tradition, as Kish notes, Ponti “enriched the optical readings of every surface with geometrical and pictorial embellishments as well as varying treatments of oak veneers.” Ponti used the Italian grissinatura technique, situating plain, vertical strips of quartered oak surfaces to expose the depth of the material. His understanding of the oak—as well as his thoughtfulness in form—created a uniform but still enticing space. The different textures produce visual interest while maintaining its sleek modernity.

\n\n

\n\n

Designed by Francesco di Giorgio, executed by Giuliano da Majano, Studiolo from the Ducal Palace in Gubbio (detail), c. 1478–82. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

\n\n

Yet there is one caveat to this comparison—the studiolo was very much an illusion in itself. Despite featuring mathematical and musical instruments, books and animals, and the signifiers of scholarship, to actually access those things, one would have had to visit other spaces in the palace, like the duke’s extensive library. Gio Ponti’s bedroom suite, however, is exactly what it purports to be: a beautiful, thoughtful space designed to hold books and treasures, for living comfortably, as a “space to rest and wonder.”

Lucio Fontana and Osvaldo Borsani, Wall-mounted console, designed for the dining room of Casa S., Milan, c. 1950. Estimate £100,000 - 150,000. Design London.

\n\n

Exploring the relationship between the object and space, this remarkable wall-mounted console is the result of the collaboration and friendship of artist Lucio Fontana and architect Osvaldo Borsani. Synthesising classical and modern vocabularies, the work dates from the early 1950s and belongs to a series of furniture and interiors designed by Borsani that incorporate painted or sculptural elements by Fontana. Borsani’s work was expanding from the highly customised artisan production of Arredamenti Borsani Varedo towards the industrial design of Tecno, coinciding with the transition in Fontana’s work from his Baroque-inspired forms to Spatialism.

\n\n

Lucio Fontana and Osvaldo Borsani, Wall-mounted console, designed for the dining room of Casa S., Milan (detail), c. 1950. Estimate £100,000 - 150,000. Design London.

\n\n

Throughout the 1950s, Borsani and Fontana collaborated on residential and commercial projects, through which they developed ideas that explored extending surfaces and spaces. While referencing Baroque ceiling frescoes, the console’s sculptural extension from the wall also parallels Fontana’s investigation into dissolving its physical dimension, reflecting his and Borsani’s shared desire to address conventional relationships between the object and its surrounding space. Fontana had published his first manifesto on Spatialism in 1947 in which he called for a synthesis in art of color, sound, movement and time, leading to the development of his "spatial environments." Fontana’s collaborative work with architects such as Borsani, who also offered an additional set of technical skills, provided an important avenue for his exploration of space and the integration of art and the viewer within it.

\n\n

\n
The [a]esthetic of the organic movement replaces the empty [a]esthetic of fixed forms. – Lucio Fontana
\n

\n\n

Having embraced new ideological and technological advances throughout his career, Borsani played an instrumental role in the formation of Italian modernist design, while remaining dedicated to the country’s tradition of craftsmanship and quality of materials. This enduring commitment paired with his pursuit and understanding of design as addressing more than the functional underscored Borsani’s collaborative approach to his work. With a desire to bring art into the everyday environment, Borsani fostered a dialogue within his practice that extended beyond the traditional bounds of architecture and design.

\n\n

\n
Where the plastic form is inseparable from the notion of time, the images appear to abandon the plane and continue into space the movements they suggest. – Lucio Fontana
\n

\n\n

This interdisciplinary approach flourished in the context of post-war Milan and the resulting economic upturn, which created a momentum and openness for an exchange of ideas and research across cultural fields. Fontana’s spatial research and exploration of dimensionality provided an intersection for artistic exchange between the artist and Borsani, which expanded the expressive possibilities of both their practices.

\n\n

\n\n

Lucio Fontana and Osvaldo Borsani, Wall-mounted console, designed for the dining room of Casa S., Milan (detail), c. 1950. Estimate £100,000 - 150,000. Design London.

\n\n

Each element of Borsani’s interiors were considered within the entire composition, often achieved through a dialogue between tradition and innovation, to create a continuity of material and space. The asymmetry and surface effect of the black marble tabletop with highlights of blue and silver creates a dynamic quality that moves beyond the Rationalist design of Borsani’s earlier work, while retaining a purity of form. The sculptural supporting frame executed to Fontana’s design and handpainted by the artist, further contributes to this freer approach. The iconography of the gilded putti, which give the illusion of supporting the painted veil surrounding the marble slab, and reference Italian Renaissance and Baroque art, suggest movement as they lift the console through space. The work appears expressive and free of constraint, while simultaneously structuring the composition of the original interior, together reflecting the dynamic exchange between architect and artist.

Beverly Pepper, Unique table (detail), c. 1973. Estimate £25,000 - 35,000. Design London.

\n\n

“A painting by a 30-year-old American mother was hung among 60 works of many of the world’s greatest artists today in a Rome art show,” wrote the Associated Press in 1953. The group of artists included Goya, Renoir, Matisse, and Picasso—but the one who stuck out? That was Beverly Pepper, an expectation-defying, convention-breaking sculptor who became one of the most important artists of her generation.

\n\n

Born in Flatbush, Brooklyn in 1922, Beverly Pepper (née Stoll) was the daughter of Jewish immigrants. Legend has it that Pepper’s artistic career began at age six, when she surreptitiously purchased a set of colored pencils with a dollar pilfered from her mother’s purse. Her childhood precociousness eventually transformed into a serious academic interest in industrial design, which, alongside advertising design, she studied at the Pratt Institute.

\n\n

\n\n

Beverly Pepper, Unique table, c. 1973. Estimate £25,000 - 35,000. Design London.

\n\n

Despite her exceptional talent, it was, according to convention, unfeminine and unacceptable for her to pursue her industrial interests. As an alternative, she pursued work as an art director in advertising, but in the 1940s, Pepper left New York to resettle in Paris. There, she studied with André Lhote and Fernand Léger and became a respected abstract painter. In 1951, she moved to Todi, Italy, where she lived until her death in February 2020.

\n\n

Pepper’s pivot to sculpture came in 1960 during a trip to Angkor Wat in Cambodia. Dr. Margaret Schmitz writes in her essay, “Connective Art: Beverly Pepper’s Utopic Vision for Design,” that Pepper was “seduced by the ancient temple complex’s monumental sculptures, architecture, and the way nature had overtaken the site. Entranced by the idea that the passage of time and a union between human beings and the larger world could be made so visibly manifest, she had the epiphany that sculpture might help her express these transcendental ideas.”

\n\n

\n
The work should be in dialogue with the people around it...this is a prime function of art in a world increasingly hostile to human life.
\n

\n\n

Pepper moved to working with steel and iron, unperturbed by the materials’ long association with masculinity. In 1962, she was commissioned by Italsider, a subsidiary of U.S. Steel, to create a sculpture for an outdoor exhibition in Italy, alongside names such as Alexander Calder and David Smith. Bold as ever, Pepper lied to secure the commission, saying she could weld. Pepper secretly took courses with a local instructor, immersed herself in steel, and produced exceptional works in abstract forms.

\n\n

Pepper’s angled and curvilinear creations were monumental and profoundly impactful. Schmitz points out that Pepper drew theoretical and aesthetic inspiration from Land Art and Minimalism—but she was also crucial in the movements’ development. She was even the first artist to experiment with Cor-Ten steel, though many would mistakenly credit Richard Serra or Donald Judd with the milestone.

\n\n

\n\n

\n\n

Behind her technical advancements and craftsmanship was “Connective Art,” Pepper’s theoretical and utopian impulse. Citing environmental pollution and the fragmentation of spirit, Pepper insisted that modern art and public art, especially, must connect with everyday people. “The work should be in dialogue with the people around it,” she explained. “I believe this is a prime function of art in a world increasingly hostile to human life.”

\n\n

In the decades to follow, Pepper became known for this conceptual approach, as well as her visually impactful artworks—which, even in their monumental, metallic form appear seemingly weightless. Her circa 1973 table is an excellent example of her oeuvre, incorporating both polished stainless steel and brushed steel that interact with and abstract the object's surroundings. The table also has a support hidden below the floor, ensuring an unsuspended fantasy that this complex, steel artwork could balance on its triangular tip. Pepper's work has been collected by institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and the Centre Pompidou and can be found in public spaces across the globe.

\n\n

\n
My intention is that the meaning of my work rests in experiencing it.
\n

\n\n

And because of their conceptual makeup and multisensory treatment of material, Pepper’s sculptures—utilitarian, pioneering, angular, brilliant—are at their best when encountered in person, allowing the viewer to unlock an individual participatory sensation. For her work, Pepper asserted, was an event in itself: “seeing, touching, and the physical sensory engagement is the way into my sculpture; my intention is that the meaning of my work rests in experiencing it.”

The 1950s were an extremely productive decade for Gio Ponti. The multidisciplinary designer promoted Italy's tradition of artisan craftmanship while simultaneously embracing industrial production through his own work, Domus magazine, and exhibitions such as the Milan Triennale. We challenged our specialists to choose six highlights from the prolific period—and the following works illustrate Ponti's continued development of design typologies, his expression of geometric compositions in three dimensions, and his dedication to visual and physical lightness

Ponti exhibited the "Distex" armchair design at the X Milan Triennale in 1954. The present armchair is a rare example that retains its original upholstery. Emphasized by the contrasting use of fabric and vinyl upholstery, the geometric, multifaceted form referenced contemporary skyscrapers.

2. Rare Low Table

\n\n

Ponti often favoured recurring, graphic motifs that transformed into geometric compositions. This table design prominently features the diamond, which became central to his visual vocabulary in both design and architecture. In addition to its geometry, the tabletop’s open latticework illustrates Ponti’s signature play of light and shadow. His manipulation of voided space adds levity to the traditional craftsmanship of wood furniture.

3. Prototype ‘Mariposa’ Sofa

\n\n

This sofa is a prototype that was designed for the XI Milan Triennale in 1957. Although originally conceived for serial production, the design never went into manufacture and only two examples are known to exist. The other known example was created for Villa Planchart in Caracas, one of Ponti’s celebrated architectural projects, and remains there still.

\n\n

The “Mariposa” or “Butterfly” sofa was inspired by the rough surfaces and roofs of Venezuelan villas. Playing with surface, the design offers continuous change in appearances, depending on one's position and perception. From all angles, its form gives a sense of being without weight or mass, like a perched butterfly.

4. Rare Dressing Table and 'Superleggera' Side Chair

\n\n

Also exhibited at the XI Milan Triennale in 1957, this dressing table exemplifies a design typology that Ponti constantly evolved throughout his career. This custom example was exquisitely wrought by renowned cabinetmaker Giordano Chiesa, with blue and violet laminates and white painted finishes, emblematic of Ponti’s preferred contrasts of pure colors with black, white, or gray. The “Superleggera” chair is one of the most iconic Italian post-war designs. The slender, elegant design was the culmination of Ponti’s determination to create lightest chair possible.

\n\n

Gio Ponti, Rare dressing table and 'Superleggera' side chair, model no. 699, designed for the XI Milan Triennale, c. 1957. Estimate £20,000 - 30,000. Design London.

5. Pair of Wall Lights with Niches

\n\n

After the war, Ponti explored multifunctional furnishings that were integrated into the structure of his rooms. This typology was expressed in different scales, ranging from a series of wall lights (including the present lot)—which served also as spotlights to illuminate Ponti’s ceramic works—to his larger “organized walls” (for example lots 84, 85, 86). The form of the wall light with niche could be installed individually, while other examples were integrated into Ponti’s designs for bookcases and organized walls.

6. Desk and chair with integrated ‘Parete attrezzata’

\n\n

Along with lots 84 and 85, this desk and chair form part of the bedroom designed for an apartment in Busto Arsizio. Together, they illustrate the architect’s concept of the parete attrezzata or “organized wall.” Ponti first introduced the idea of combining shelving, light fixtures, and objects within a single panel in the late 1940s, and it would continue to inform his interior design of domestic and commercial spaces with an increasing focus on visual lightness.
