Catalogue Essay
This chair was acquired at the “Time for Design” auction at Phillips in 2016 and donated by the Campana Brothers. The auction benefited the Design Museum’s move to its new location on Kensington High Street in London. Fernando Campana and Humberto Campana’s “Sushi III” chair takes its name from the process of preparing a sushi roll. The chair’s seat and back consists of dozens of pieces of fabric that have been rolled and sewn together into cylinders and then cut laterally. The chair is representative of much of the Campana Brother’s work and their playful and inventive design approach.
