"I wonder if the moon is not the same moon as the past, I wonder if the spring is not the same spring as the past."
— the ghost of Lady Izutsu
This work is an official collaboration between the artist collective EXCALIBUR and the DeFi-staked crypto collectibles Aavegotchi. The word aave in Aavegotchi means "ghost" in Finnish, and the game is about collecting various NFTs with a cute ghost as the motif.
Within the tradition of noh, the classical Japanese performing art, there is a category of theatre referred to as mugen noh in which the main character is a ghost, spirit, or some phantasmal being. EXCALIBUR has created this work in reference to the noh Izutsu, which is one of the masterpieces of mugen noh. The main theme of Izutsu is the idea of unwavering love. The main character, a female ghost, waits for the man she loves, even after death. This crypto art overlays the unimaginable evolution of our future society through blockchain technology, and the fundamental human sentiments that remain unchanged even as the eras change.
An important aesthetic principle of noh is yugen, which refers to a beauty so profound that it cannot be measured by human knowledge. Gotchi-Noh / Izutsu uses a noh stage and noh masks as a metaphor for the metaverse, which predicts the yugen of a new space."Only I haven't changed anything and I still love you."
—the poet Ariwara no Narihira (825-880)
