Kon Trubkovich, Dance before my mirror 2, 2024. New Now: Modern & Contemporary Art.

\n\n

With the Supreme Court’s catastrophic 2022 decision, reproductive health care services — including access to legal abortion — are now under attack in the United States. By organizing benefit events and campaigns, NOISE FOR NOW provides opportunities for artists and entertainers to use their talents to raise money and communicate to the world that reproductive rights are human rights.

\n\n

In the upcoming New Now sale in New York, Phillips and NOISE FOR NOW come together to offer a selection of seven lots in support of this crucial cause. 90% of the proceeds from this selection will be donated to NOISE FOR NOW and redistributed to the Abortion Care Network’s Keep Our Clinics fund and to the National Network of Abortion Funds.

\n\n

Artists Cindy Sherman, Marilyn Minter, Justin Williams, Alejandra Moros, Kon Trubkovich, and Francesca DiMattio have donated works directly to the cause. An incredible work by Umar Rashid (Frohawk Two Feathers) is also included in the selection. From established artists like Sherman and Minter — whose works resonate increasingly strongly in our post-#MeToo, post-Roe environment — to a younger generation of trailblazing artists who have experienced the recent political tensions as they come of age, the selection offers collectors of all levels and interests the opportunity to not only own significant and important work, but to make a difference. Phillips is proud to partner with NOISE FOR NOW and these artists in support of this vision.

\n\n

Here, discover the works on offer for this urgent cause.

\n\n

Phillips’ New Now: Modern & Contemporary Art auction takes place at 432 Park Avenue on 25 September. The preview exhibition is open from 16 September until the auction.

Cindy Sherman

\n\n

\n\n

Cindy Sherman, Untitled, 1993/2023. New Now: Modern & Contemporary Art.

\n\n

Artist Cindy Sherman has never been one to shy away from addressing the complex issues facing women today. Many of her works remind viewers of the imbalance between the cultural idolization of women’s beauty and the continued silencing of women whenever they assert their rights. Sherman was one of nearly 40 artists who contributed work to the groundbreaking 2020 exhibition Abortion is Normal at Presenhuber Galerie in New York. The scope of the exhibition emerged from the May 2019 abortion ban in Alabama and raised awareness and funds for women’s reproductive rights. The work on offer here began as an option for a fashion series in the early ‘90s but was later recast with desaturated colors reminiscent of silent film stills, leaving viewers with an ambiguous sensation of time. In a sense, we cannot tell if this image is contemporary or historic, a timely meditation on the myth of linear progress.

\n\n

Marilyn Minter

\n\n

Marilyn Minter, Cuntrol, 2020. New Now: Modern & Contemporary Art.

\n\n

Marilyn Minter’s Cuntrol was included in the 2020 exhibition Abortion is Normal at Presenhuber Galerie in New York. In an interview with Arsenal Contemporary Art ahead of the exhibition, Marilyn Minter was prescient about the urgency of the issues at hand, remarking, “What will a 16-year-old kid do in Texas when she has to travel out of state to get an abortion? What’s the nearest state? I fought for this in ’73 when I was a kid, I didn’t think this day would come again. I don’t think people in your age group realize how close we are to losing Roe vs. Wade.” On Cuntrol, she went on to note, “I didn’t want to put in something easy, it’s just not that kind of show […] I’m making a tough piece; it’s a powerful piece for me. I think that if you’re not angry and upset, you’re not paying attention right now.”

\n\n

Justin Williams

\n\n

Justin Williams, Walking scorpion, John played guitar to no one, 2024. New Now: Modern & Contemporary Art.

\n\n

Justin Williams’ figurative works are contemplative depictions of community, resettlement, and modes of living. With glowing contrasts between thin washes of murky and bright oil paint, Williams explores his personal history, ranging from his grandparents’ migration from Egypt to Australia and his personal conception of “the idea of outsider culture.” Williams lives and works in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and has gained global renown, with solo exhibitions in Paris, Taipei, and Los Angeles in 2024 alone.

\n\n

Francesca DiMattio

\n\n

Francesca DiMattio, Sevres Mint Bench, 2022. New Now: Modern & Contemporary Art.

\n\n

Exploring the history of craft, decorative arts, and interior design with a feminist lens, Francesca DiMattio confronts materialistic impulses in sculptures and paintings that are as striking as they are peculiar. She’s explained, “My materials reference things that are desired, but the making of each work necessitates a kind of crumbling or breaking down of the structure of that desire.” DiMattio holds a BFA from Cooper Union and an MFA from Columbia and has enjoyed rising success, with recent solo exhibitions at Pippy Houldsworth Gallery in London, Nina Johnson in Miami, Florida, and group exhibitions at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (Mass MOCA) and Kasmin, New York.

\n\n

Umar Rashid (Frohawk Two Feathers)

\n\n

Umar Rashid (Frohawk Two Feathers), The Fire Witch, 2008. New Now: Modern & Contemporary Art.

\n\n

Rashid, also known as Frohawk Two Feathers, creates works that employ text, graphic illustration, painting, and sculpture to explore alternative historical narratives. In works that fold our sense of time and place in on itself, the artist challenges us to confront historical injustices head-on — a challenge that feels strikingly relevant to the cause supported by the sale of these works. Born in 1976 in Chicago, Rashid’s work has appeared in group shows at François Ghebaly Gallery and Jeffrey Deitch and sits in several museum collections, including the Brooklyn Museum, Hudson Rover Museum, Nevada Museum of Art, and Santa Barbara Museum of Art, among many others.

\n\n

Alejandra Moros

\n\n

Alejandra Moros, Abrazo, 2024. New Now: Modern & Contemporary Art.

\n\n

24-year-old artist Alejandra Moros lives and works in her hometown of Miami, Florida. Her works explore themes of curiosity, transformation, and evolution, seen clearly in the twisting fleshy forms and the play of light and shadow in this 2024 work. Her solo exhibitions include Tip of the Tongue, Bridge of the Nose at Spinello Projects in Miami and Pierce, Push, Pull, Press at GARTEN Gallery in Como, Italy.

\n\n

Kon Trubkovich

\n\n

\n\n

Kon Trubkovich, Dance before my mirror 2, 2024. New Now: Modern & Contemporary Art.

\n\n

Born in Moscow in 1979 before emigrating to the United States as the USSR collapsed, Kon Trubkovich explores the degradation of personal and collective memories with visual references to recently built but already failing technologies. The artist’s visual exploration of historical injustices imposed on people by their government resonates strongly within this selection, highlighted by this haunting, large-scale portrait of a woman. Her face is subversively adorned with daisies — typically seen to signify ladylike themes of purity, childbirth, and cheerfulness. The work’s visual representation of digital malfunction seems to imply that our memory of its subject is in the process of erasure. Trubkovich has exhibited widely, including at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, and the Kunstmuseum Bern in Switzerland, among many others.

Sara Anstis, Only the Beach, the Sea, and the Two of Us (detail), 2019. New Now: Modern & Contemporary Art New York.

\n\n

Sara Anstis

\n\n

Sara Anstis, Only the Beach, the Sea, and the Two of Us, 2019. New Now: Modern & Contemporary Art New York.

\n\n

Auction Debut

\n\n

With gazes often directed at us, toward one another, or twisted in ephemeral bliss, Sara Anstis’ figures exist in ethereal landscapes. We tend to catch them preoccupied with their own delight in an anthropomorphic web of imagined mythologies and sapphic desire, exploring their world and bodies with enviable freedom. Anstis renders these scenes in colorful expanses of soft pastel that begin as abstractions in the artist's process before she gradually begins to explore her characters’ identities. “I tell myself that one day I’ll leave the abstraction as is — but that’s probably a lie,” Anstis has confessed. “I am too in love with aiming gazes and fleshing out bodies.”

\n\n

A young artist hot on the rise, Sara Anstis grew up on the small Canadian island of Salt Spring before studying art and sociology at Concordia University in Montréal. She then earned an MFA at the Valand Academy in Gothenburg, Sweden, and further honed her skills in a postgraduate program at the Royal Drawing School in London. Her work has recently been seen in exhibitions at Kasmin in New York, Various Small Fires in Los Angeles and Seoul, and in several group exhibitions throughout Europe and the United States.

\n\n

Daisy Parris

\n\n

Daisy Parris, I'd Rather Get No Sleep Next To You Than Sleep Alone, 2022. New Now: Modern & Contemporary Art New York.

\n\n

British artist Daisy Parris has admitted that they are “a very sensitive, emotional person — I feel everything to the extreme.” Such extremes are revealed in their colossal rendering of a psychological topography, I’d Rather Get No Sleep Next To You Than Sleep Alone — the first major work by the artist to come to auction. At nearly 15 feet wide, the work is assertive yet endlessly inviting, offering us a moment to slow down and reflect on the artist’s masterful use of gesture, texture, and composition to express the passion, ecstasy, worry, and past experience that they — and we as viewers — carry in our minds and bodies. When asked to describe their works in just a few words, Parris simply replied: “From the guts.”

\n\n

Raised by an artist mother and Punk musician father, Parris was inspired as a child by discovering their mother’s student works, which she made before she had children and her priorities shifted. Now, as the young artist’s star rises, they can reflect on significant success as their highly personal abstract and text-based works have garnered solo exhibitions throughout the US and UK. Parris graduated from Goldsmiths with honors in 2014 and now divides their time between London and Somerset in the UK.

\n\n

Violeta Maya

\n\n

Violeta Maya, De donde vengo I y II, 2023. New Now: Modern & Contemporary Art New York.

\n\n

Auction Debut

\n\n

For Spanish artist Violeta Maya, the starting point is an impulsive collaboration with the will of her work’s surface. She begins each work by dousing her canvases in water before spreading them on the floor and applying acrylic paint and pure pigment, resulting in vaporous forms and enchanting hues. As humidity conditions impact the speed with which the canvases dry, this process ensures the artist is fully in the present and connecting with her environment in a creative process she has described as “meditative.”

\n\n

Maya’s approach also alters the way the canvas accepts paint, freezing in time both her own state of mind and that hour’s atmospheric conditions. The final works are often presented within multiple frames, allowing our eyes to fill in the space between them, with the surrounding environment creating a kind of glow. Based in Madrid, Maya graduated from Central Saint Martins in London in 2015 and has since participated in solo exhibitions throughout Spain, Mexico, and New York.

\n\n

Liliane Tomasko

\n\n

Liliane Tomasko, Vestige, 2012. New Now: Modern & Contemporary Art New York.

\n\n

Auction Debut

\n\n

Liliane Tomasko’s enticing and softly blurred work Vestige is highly characteristic of the Swiss-born emerging artist’s works. Her dreamlike, glowing paintings from this period evoke the presence of an absence, taking source imagery from close-up Polaroids of worn clothing, slept-in bedsheets, or used mattresses. They show the traces of our existence that we leave behind in intimate interiors, executed with soft, sweeping brushstrokes of radiant color that seem to dance across the canvas like ghostly trails of light. In this sense, her works depict the sensation of an unseen someone rather than their figure.

\n\n

Tomasko trained at the Chelsea College of Art & Design and the Royal Academy of Arts in London and now divides her time between New York and London, where she lives with her husband, the artist Sean Scully. Having been featured in solo exhibitions throughout Europe and the United States since 1998, Tomasko’s works are steadily gaining attention, featured in nine international solo and group shows in 2023 alone. Her work is held in the permanent collections of nearly 20 institutions, as far ranging as the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, the Modern Art Museum of Forth Worth, The Albertina in Vienna, and the Kunstmuseum Bern.

\n\n

Stephanie Temma Hier

\n\n

Stephanie Temma Hier, On Those Blue Remembered Hills, 2020. New Now: Modern & Contemporary Art New York.

\n\n

Auction Debut

\n\n

Stephanie Temma Hier’s remarkably inventive practice sits at the intersection of ceramic sculpture and oil painting, seeming to forge a new genre along the way. Born in Toronto and now based in New York, the young artist’s works often feature edible fruits or vegetation depicted with paint and glazed ceramic sculptures of wildlife affixed to the edges of the canvas. The result is an astonishing depth and beauty clearly seen in the gently psychedelic On Those Blue Remembered Hills. She incorporates found imagery from the digital sphere into her process, taking artifacts from the fast-moving and endless scroll of the internet and social media platforms and rendering them permanent through a physical, considered process.

\n\n

Her work has been shown in exhibitions and art fairs throughout North America and in Europe, including at The Armory Show in New York and Nino Mier Gallery in Brussels and Los Angeles, where the present work was first shown in 2020 amid a period of global isolation.

\n\n

Mikey Yates

\n\n

Mikey Yates, Tekken, 2019. New Now: Modern & Contemporary Art New York.

\n\n

Auction Debut

\n\n

Mikey Yates’ warm and inviting scenes of everyday life spent among friends and family come from the memories of his personal experiences growing up in the 1990s and early 2000s as a military child of Filipino-American heritage. Understanding the artist’s background helps explain the sense of comfort his works exude, coming from the mind of a creator who understands that the concept of home is not a fixed place. The artist often references the trappings of childhood in the ‘90s, including the game Tekken depicted here, but in a manner that is never tastelessly nostalgic. Rather, the experience of viewing his works gives us new tools to see details in our own memories that we may have forgotten.

\n\n

The young artist holds an MFA from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and studied at the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture. Since 2020, Yates has seen continued success with solo exhibitions at Taymour Grahne Projects in London, RULE Gallery in Marfa, Texas, and Shulamit Nazarian in Los Angeles.

Celebrated for his nuanced representations of athletics, Derek Fordjour turns to sport spectators in Windfall, 2016. The present work depicts the close of a baseball game, viewed from within the grandstands. The scene is experienced behind a standing crowd of fans – some donning numbered jerseys, while others hold striped umbrellas. The baseball diamond is dotted by three groundsmen who tend the field, sweeping away precipitation and confetti beneath the stadium lights and a darkening sky. Fordjour astutely portrays the dynamics of the live event, isolating the moment when the mostly behind-the-scenes laborers briefly take center-stage before an expectant crowd.

This separation between those who watch and those who perform—whether on the sports field or the socio-economic stage—serves as a critical commentary on the roles and expectations that society imposes based on race, class and other identities. Fordjour points to the cultural significance of sports and spectatorship as well as the industry’s business dealings, which can crucially dictate the success of individuals and franchises, prompting consideration of power dynamics and systems of valuation.

“As both an artist and marginalized person in society, I am keenly aware of my sense of agency. Much akin to the plight of a player situated within an individual or collective game, knowledge of the rules, the acquisition and development of skill and an adept application of both are critical to one’s survival.”
\n—Derek FordjourWindfall was first exhibited at Luce Gallery in Turin in the artist’s 2016 show Agency & Regulation. This body of paintings utilized spatial flattening reminiscent of modernist figuration to explore the opposing forces of freedom of choice and behavioral independence versus authoritative organizations. These theories are often considered in relation to the field of economics, but also apply broadly to our social structures. Turning to the stadium workers and backs of the crowd, Windfall evidences a deepening of Fordjour’s engagement with the allegories of art and sport. Rendered in the artist’s distinctive muted palette, the frenzy of the post-game celebration is stilled, confetti frozen in space, and attention is drawn to those whose work is crucial but removed from the spectacle.
