American | B. 1936 D. 2010Dennis Hopper, while perhaps most well-known for his film accomplishments, was a prolific photographer, painter and sculptor. Hopper's painting style ranged from Abstract Impressionism to Photorealism and often included references to his cinematic work. His photography, which began in the 1960s when he shot for Vogue and other magazines, most famously captured intimate portraits of celebrities including Jane Fonda and Andy Warhol.Also in the 1960s, Hopper began painting and collecting Pop art. Over the course of his lifetime, he amassed a formidable array of modern and contemporary art by the likes of Julian Schnabel, Ed Ruscha, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst and Robin Rhode. His own work has been shown in solo or group exhibitions around the world including at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington D.C., Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota, the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.
