Harry Callahan, Chicago (Trees in Snow), circa 1950. One of ten photographs from The Photographer and the American Landscape. Photographs New York.

\n\n

In 1963, John Szarkowski, the newly appointed photography curator at The Museum of Modern Art assembled his first major exhibition for the institution, The Photographer and the American Landscape. Modest in scope — showcasing the work of only 19 photographers — the exhibition attempted to identify the through-line in American landscape photography from the 19th century to the present day. The exhibition received positive reviews in the New York Times and in Aperture magazine, and Szarkowski’s brilliant curatorial career was underway.

\n\n

\n\n

\n\n

Included in the exhibition was a suite of ten subtle but remarkable photographs by Harry Callahan which are reemerging in Phillips’ April 4 Photographs auction for the first time since they were purchased in 1983. Works by Callahan had been included in earlier MoMA exhibitions organized by curator Edward Steichen, but these landscape photographs as curated by Szarkowski presented something different. Indeed, the ten Callahan photographs, as they were arranged on the Museum’s walls, formed a cohesive exhibition within the larger show. Hung by Szarkowski from dark to light, the photographs’ sequence could be interpreted as a demonstration of the ten-zone grey scale. More important, however, was the progression of the images, left to right, from recognizable plant forms to ones nearing abstraction, with the famous Trees in Snow, Chicago, at the mid-point — a new contextualization of this important photograph.

The photographs were loaned to the museum by Callahan himself. After their return to him, Callahan sold them to George H. Dalsheimer, proprietor of Baltimore’s G. H. Dalsheimer Gallery. While Dalsheimer dealt primarily in painting, prints, and sculpture, he was an early and influential photography collector. In 1988, the Baltimore Museum of Art would acquire his photography collection, where it remains one of the jewels of their photography holdings. In 1983, Dalsheimer sold the suite to a young collector named Thayer Tutt.

\n\n

Thayer Tutt was studying geological engineering at Princeton in the 1970s when he had the good fortune to take a class with the eminent photo historian Peter C. Bunnell. Tutt became smitten with photography and signed up for another class with Bunnell. In 1976, Tutt purchased his first photograph, a study of the temple at Karnak, Egypt, by the 19th century British photographer Francis Frith. This acquisition initiated his brilliant career as a collector. Bunnell was his initial guide to the young world of collecting photography.

\n\n

Jerry Uelsmann, Peter C. Bunnell.

\n\n

It was Bunnell who took Tutt to his first photography auction and, there, introduced him to the pioneering gallerist Maggi Weston, owner of Weston Gallery in Carmel, California. Ms. Weston, in turn, introduced Tutt to Andrea Stillman (then Andrea Gray) who worked as an assistant to Ansel Adams. Through Ms. Weston and Ms. Stillman, Tutt had direct access to a remarkable array of photography, from 19th century masters to early work by Adams and Paul Strand. It was a great time to buy, Tutt recalls fondly, “you didn’t have to be rich to collect photography.”

\n\n

In 1983, Ms. Stillman approached Tutt regarding a suite of ten photographs by Harry Callahan that had hung on the walls of The Museum of Modern Art two decades earlier. When Tutt saw the prints in person he was amazed by their fine print quality and condition and agreed to purchase them. Ms. Stillman facilitated the transaction between Dalsheimer and Tutt. Until recently, the photographs hung on the walls in Tutt’s home in Colorado. Now this stellar group is up for auction and ready to hang again in a new home.

Sohei Nishino, Diorama Map New York, 2006. Photographs New York.

\n\n

The truth of the reality and the memory of an experience are often in flux. Naturally, the space between the two is where photography forms a connective tissue which, ultimately, may not bridge the gap, but rather, as Sohei Nishino understands well, offers both perspective and conceptual scope for the ways memory and reality continually shape one another.

\n\n

For nearly two decades, Nishino has explored these concepts in his series Diorama Maps. This project, first developed and conceptualized when the artist was a student at the Osaka University of the Arts in Japan, produces an uncanny reimagining of various cities and sites, drawing inspiration from the 18th century Japanese mapmaker Inō Tadataka. Produced from February through July of 2006, Diorama Map New York is a striking example of the photographer’s novel approach.

\n\n

\n\n

Sohei Nishino, Diorama Map New York, 2006. Photographs New York.

\n\n

To produce these works, Nishino wanders his chosen city, typically over the course of several months, and produces an excess of images, frequently from a high angle perspective. Shooting 35mm film, he captures photographs of landmarks, atmospheric elements, and even residents on the street. After the initial imagine-making phrase, he then meticulously constructs massive collages using bits and pieces from numerous prints — often working with thousands of photographs for one project.

\n\n

Once satisfied with his layout, Nishino photographs the final collage. The results are massive kaleidoscopic prints, sometimes up to seven feet wide. This impressive scale invites the viewer to inspect various details of the scene closely. Diorama Map New York is no different. At almost six feet tall, this colossal work depicts many iconic sites, including the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, and Strawberry Fields in Central Park. However, as recognizable as this landscape is, Nishino’s maps aren’t necessarily geographically accurate; an intentional choice as the artist is more interested in conveying the sensory and experiential aspects of a place in gestalt.

\n\n

\n
…a trace of the way in which I walked through it, an embodiment of my awareness, a microcosm of the life and energy that comprises the city.
\n—Sohei Nishino
\n

\n\n

Nishino’s meticulous exploration in the studio is as essential as his walks through the cities. The artist notes, “I can say that each of these processes constitutes a part of my journey through the cities.” He has even been known to revisit source material years later to produce new Diorama Maps of cities explored previously — finding new ways to see them as his memories have developed with time. As the artist notes: “Photographs are not completed at the moment they are taken, but are completed in the process of recollecting the memories thereafter by confronting them again.”

\n\n

In this sense, the Diorama Maps are as much representations of his own identity and spirit as they are dreamscapes or maps of cities. “I believe that what results from my confronting these enormous number of photographs and actualizing (them) again in the form of a map by integrating them, is my personal portrait, as well as my representation of the appearance of a specific city whose glimpse it has given me.”

\n\n

\n\n

Sohei Nishino, Diorama Map New York (detail), 2006. Photographs New York.

\n\n

The Japanese cartographer Inō Tadataka (1745–1818) is a key influence for Sohei Nishino and there is a shared sense of endurance in the process for both. Tadataka is recognized as the first person to employ modern scientific techniques to survey the geography of Japan, an act that led to the first definitive maps of the island nation, which were in use as late as 1924. Having been a successful businessman, Tadataka began the study of western astronomy, geography, and mathematics upon his retirement at the age of 49. In 1800, at the age of 55, Tadataka set out on an official survey of the country. Though he expected to complete the process in a few years, the project consumed the remaining 17 years of his life, requiring 3,736 days spent taking measurements alone.

\n\n

Though Nishino’s Diorama Maps are not intended as geographical references for scientific study, we can get a sense of the patience in the process shared between Tadataka and Nishino. In an age of advanced technology, a cartographical process approached as art rather than science can impress much more by posing questions about society and culture rather than simply imparting facts. As Nishino says, “We have easy access to apps and Google maps, and so much information at hand about places before we visit. But in using these methods to reach somewhere quickly, and perhaps taking a shortcut, we sometimes lose a sense of time and a sense of ourselves. People forget about the process and focus on the final point. I want to show the sort of sensitivity that we used to have towards the journey.”

\n\n

\n\n

Sohei Nishino, Diorama Map New York (detail), 2006. Photographs New York.

\n\n

Though geographical accuracy is of course considered in his process, Nishino often alters scale and occasionally repeats images from different vantage points. In this way, his maps represent the fallibility of our own memories of time and place — the works express a psychogeography as experienced by the artist, rather than a functional representation. They share with us how a place made him feel, act, and see — a way of understanding what a place can mean or how it can be perceived, rather than simply what is there.

Robert Mapplethorpe (1946–1989). Man in Polyester Suit, 20 x 16", 1980. Gelatin silver print, printed 1980.

\n\n

\n
While Mapplethorpe may have created this photograph to shock, its success as a provocation rests on its solid compositional structure; there is not a single element that could be adjusted to improve it.
\n\n
– Paul Martineau and Britt Salvesen
\n

\n\n

Man in Polyester Suit encapsulates Robert Mapplethorpe’s unique ability to create an image that is both confrontational in content and technically and aesthetically perfect. It has become, in the years since its making, one of Mapplethorpe’s best-known images and has inspired both acclaim and controversy.

\n\n

Over 40 years after its making, Man in Polyester Suit has lost none of its undeniable impact. Its subject is Mapplethorpe’s lover, Milton Moore. The two had a tempestuous and ultimately doomed relationship. It is a testament to Mapplethorpe’s talents that — out of the messiness of his physical and emotional entanglement with Moore — he created this austere, dignified, and transgressively-charged photograph.

\n\n

The image was exhibited in no fewer than 20 international museum and gallery venues during Mapplethorpe’s lifetime, including his 1981 exhibition at the Frankfurter Kunstverein and his multi-venue 1983 retrospective, which originated at London’s Institute of Contemporary Art. The photograph was famously impounded by customs officials upon its arrival for that exhibition.

\n\n

Man in Polyester Suit was shown in the Whitney Museum’s 1988 Mapplethorpe retrospective and was a cornerstone of the Black Males exhibition in Amsterdam, New York, and Rome. Mapplethorpe also included it, with a slightly different cropping and in a smaller format than the print offered here, in his Z Portfolio of 1981 — and it was illustrated in his definitive collection of Black male nudes, The Black Book of 1986.

\n\n

Man in Polyester Suit became a key focal point of the controversy surrounding The Perfect Moment, the seminal retrospective exhibition of Mapplethorpe’s work that originated at Philadelphia’s Institute of Contemporary Art in 1988 and was slated for six subsequent museum venues in America. The presence of Mapplethorpe’s explicit images of sadomasochism and other sexually charged photographs on display in public venues, some of which received government funding, raised the ire of conservative lawmakers, Senator Jesse Helms foremost among them. Helms on the floor of the United States Senate railed against the supposed obscenity of the material and pushed for legislation that would limit funding for the arts. Man in Polyester Suit was one of four Mapplethorpe images that Helms sent to fellow congressmen to bolster his condemnation of the show and to encourage their support.

(Man in Polyester Suit) has come to be regarded as perhaps the most important picture from (The Perfect Moment), as well as Mapplethorpe’s most slyly powerful work, a deadpan commentary on race, class, sexual sterotypes and the slipperty nature of phtography itself that continues to jangle nerves.

As it toured, The Perfect Moment accrued more and more controversy. When the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D. C. abruptly withdrew as a venue for the exhibition, the tension increased. By the time police entered the exhibition at Cincinnati’s Contemporary Arts Center and charged the institution and its director with obscenity, international attention reached a peak. The media storm that followed, and the ensuing trial, played out against the grim backdrop of the AIDS epidemic, with the photographer’s own illness and death from the disease in 1989. Ultimately, the Museum and its director were acquitted, and a victory won for free speech, artistic freedom, and institutional autonomy!

\n\n

In the intervening years, Man in Polyester Suit has remained one of Mapplethorpe’s signature images. Ingrid Sischy in The New Yorker called it Mapplethorpe’s “wryest image of all.” The critic Arthur C. Danto hailed Man in Polyester Suit as Mapplethorpe’s masterpiece. It is one of those works, like Edouard Manet’s Olympia or Gustave Courbet’s L’origine du monde, that challenges accepted ways of portraying the body in art. These works and their makers were vilified upon their debut. Ultimately, Man in Polyester Suit endures. Its challenge remains vibrantly relevant.

Irving Penn, Harlequin Dress (Lisa Fonssagrives-Penn), 1950. Photographs New York.

\n\n

Modern chic is something we now often take for granted, so jaded have we become. Irving Penn — among the greatest photographers of the 20th century — arguably invented it. Look no further than this, his most arresting portrait of the love of his life.
\n

\n\n

Let’s begin with the subject of this picture. Her name is Lisa Fonssagrives. Born in Sweden in 1911, she was trained from childhood as a painter, sculptor, and ballet dancer — and she went on to become the first supermodel in history. She was also the love of Irving Penn’s life. The two were married in 1950, several months before he shot this image, which was at the key formative moment of his early career as a photographer.

\n\n

Her beauty speaks for itself. Penn’s camera is notably as authentic, honest, and truth-seeing as any in the world. No tricks of light, smoke or mirrors. Fonssagrives is quite simply a natural beauty on the level of Helen of Troy.

\n\n

She is also a femme fatale. Her imperious pose — and her overall look — under Penn’s direction is as finessed and studied as any ever. This was the lead image of the legendary fashion story “Black & White” in the 1 April 1950 issue of Vogue magazine, which was only then rising to pre-eminence as the global bible for all that was chic and modern. The femme fatale archetype came to the fore in the 1941 classic The Maltese Falcon through the acting talents of Mary Astor playing opposite Humphrey Bogart. Yet it was never fully developed until this moment in time, owing to the rigors of wartime and post-war austerity which placed emphasis on women as supporters and nurturers. In no way does Penn represent his young bride as a maternal figure. She is clearly his Cleopatra.

\n\n

The harlequin dress designed by Jerry Parnis is the co-star of this picture. Its whites are whiter than white, and its blacks blacker than black. Parnis’ designs were celebrated for bringing contemporary freshness to the era of full skirts and corseted waistlines. It is a sumptuous, modern visual feast and a bold statement of supreme confidence. At first, one is tempted to connect this harlequin pattern to the Italian Baroque Commedia dell'arte pantomime theater as it is the signature costume motif of the central character, Arlecchino. Notably, 1950 found American elites looking to the style icons of Rome (and Florence). Milan design was also reforming, post-Mussolini. And the great Venetian textile mills were beginning to call the shots (behind the scenes) on couture fabrications in all the world’s fashion capitols. The long calfskin opera gloves Fonssagrives wears could not feel more Italian.

\n\n

However, it must be noted that this is no mere homage to Bella Italia. For starters, the Harlequin in the Tarot is the joker/trickster. Middle Dutch hellekijn and the Old French hellequin reference Hell and mean a kind of demon. As author Florie Gray notes, “In the translation from French to English, the harlequin lost his demonic quality and became a clown. But the traditional black/white contradistinction of this iconic pattern is an Angel/Devil dichotomy that most brings to mind Jung’s trickster, an important alchemical archetype.”

\n\n

Then there is Penn’s startling mastery of the analog chemistry in his artisanal photo-printing process. This is platinum-palladium printing at its most finessed and finest. Even in New York City, media capital of the world by the 1950s, you couldn’t just run around the corner to discover an accomplished master of this craft (like you could a pastrami sandwich). Platinum and palladium are among the most extraordinary and expensive white metals in the world. Long ago, they were also key components of the alchemist’s arsenal. And they were far too dear for your average-Joe fashion photographer to play around with. And yet, in his journey to mastery, Penn spared no expense and went to excruciating pains to raise this medium to unprecedented heights. Why? Because both are superlatively lightfast (non-fading) as compared to the conventional materials used by most — and miraculously complementary also, with platinum imparting rare warmth to the highlights and palladium the same in the shadows. This matrix is also a harlequin.

\n\n

All that said, there is also something New World and fundamentally American about this image. The Lilly Daché satin hat that Lisa wears alludes to the tricorne cap of liberty, favored in the 18th century revolutions as a symbol of staunch democratic values. These values were hot on the minds of the American people and its government at this time, after liberating Europe. The Benson & Hedges she flagrantly wields as a wand or a scepter dually alludes to the iconic and popular image then in circulation of the militiaman on the march, with shouldered musket. It goes without saying, it also stood as a symbol of women’s emancipation and empowerment.

\n\n

Could it be more clear in this image that Irving Penn loved his wife Lisa Fonssagrives as few men ever will love theirs — and that she loved him here perhaps even more, with all her heart?
