‘I’m trying not to give too much away. It’s more of a mental space, a dream space’ - Claire Tabouret

The works of the LA-based French artist Claire Tabouret explore the ebb and flow of desire, using the constant movement of the sea as a metaphor for the ever-changing tides of romantic attachment. Drawing upon personal archives and photographs found on the internet to capture anonymous figures in an unspecific time-space, her works ruminate on vulnerability in human relationships and the passing of time.

Ensconced in a seaside landscape, My Waves depicts two lovers wading into water whilst holding hands. Their bodies seem to float in a nameless world as they explore the uncharted territories present at the beginning of an intimate relationship. Fascinated by the spontaneity of the monoprints technique, the transparent layering and fluidity of the paint allow the artist to create a dynamic composition of superimposed patterns. Set against a lilac background and overlaid with expressive strokes of grass green and navy blue, the hydrous palette presents a scene that is simultaneously recognisable and disquieting, inviting spectators to project their own experiences onto the luminously-rendered silhouettes.

Claire Tabouret has been honoured with solo exhibitions at international venues including Galerie Perrotin in Seoul (2020) and in Hong Kong (2019), Almine Rech, London (2019) and HAB Galerie, Nantes (2019).
