  • While best known as a painter and sculptor, Christopher Wool has produced a considerable body of photographic work throughout his illustrious career. Road, a portfolio of 18 gelatin silver prints, shows an array of barren paths taken in West Texas. The rural landscape has served as a fountain of inspiration for the artist across media. His outdoor sculptures, produced around the same time as this portfolio, mimic the unruly tumbleweeds that Wool was capturing with his camera while his photographs capture '[landscapes] that were sculptural, in a sense, without being art.' Road illustrates the captivating aura of these sparse paths and demonstrates another avenue of Wool’s creative expression.
