  • “These years, I have been reflecting on what ‘everyday’ means in my work. I realised that what genuinely triggers my curiosity is these humdrum moments.”
    — Chris Huen Sin Kan

Based upon observations of his own quotidian experiences, the arresting works of Hong Kong-born and London-based artist Chris Huen Sin Kan explore notions of recollection, perception, and familiar moments of déjà-vu. Taking inspiration from traditional Chinese ink painting and abstract figuration, Huen records scenes of daily life away from the flurry of urbanity, which feature recurring characters, activities and landscapes, drawn from the artist’s lived experiences in Hong Kong.

Typical of Huen’s minimalistic palette, Haze in the Studio is captured from a high perspective, portraying the artist’s wife Haze resting on an office chair within a quiet interior space. Gazing idly into the distance, she remains unfazed by the clutters of household items scattered across the room, composed of deconstructed geometric forms and soft tones through small yet intentional brushstrokes. Often favouring intuition and eschewing prior sketching, Huen paints completely from memory to capture the specious present, placing emphasis on both the application of paint and the inclusion of negative space as influenced by his knowledge of Chinese ink painting.

    Detail of the present work

Heavily diluting oil paint with turpentine, Huen’s loose brushwork gives the illusion of ink on paper, while the translucency of the pigment recalls the watery, earthy shades of colour found in traditional paintings. At the same time, his exposes the bare canvas underneath in places – in contrast to the large swathe of yellow in the upper right quadrant, the bed frame, parts of the floor and various details across the room remain uncolored, echoing the traditional concept of liubai (to leave blank) as an interaction between emptiness and form. Reconnecting his art to the subjectivity of observation rather than merely replicating objects, Huen invites viewers to fill in the blank spaces via their own imaginations, an ode to the delicate transience of a fleeting moment. By giving life to what is often overlooked, the artist transforms a deeply personal scene into a shared experience that offers refuge from the familiar bustle of urban Hong Kong – quiet, slow-flowing, tranquil.

One of the most prominent Hong Kong young artists, Chris Huen graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2013 with a BA in Fine Art. He has since held numerous successful solo exhibitions at prominent galleries worldwide, such as A Day in the Life, Ota Fine Arts, Tokyo (2023); Blossoms in the Shade, Ota Fine Arts, Singapore (2022) and Puzzled Daydream, Simon Lee Gallery, London (2020). Huen’s works are held in notable collections globally, including Sifang Art Museum, Nanjing and Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami among others.
