  • Hong Kong-based artist Chris Huen Sin Kan’s works are observations of his own quotidian experiences. His works are a constellation of daily moments, swiftly constructed to bring the domestic and surreal into one compelling partnership.

Without prior sketching or under drawing, Huen deftly executes on these large canvases with techniques borrowed from traditional ink paintings and abstract figuration. His works showcase an acute awareness of his surroundings, inspired by the people, activities and landscapes around his home or his Yuen Long studio. Whether this is a curious glance from his dog Muimui (lot 117), or the portrayal of his wife Haze and their other dogs Balltsz and Doodood, these characters make up a recurring cast that dominates Huen’s subject matter. With a bright and airy palette, his brilliant use of blank spaces, fragmented forms and soft tones conjures up a specific moment in time. Deliberately omitting details, the artist works intuitively to recall a fleeting or forgotten moment from a feeling or a memory, and develops his dream-like images that have emerged from these organic and haphazard dabs of paint. Presenting unusual emotional sensitivity, Huen’s deeply personal works resonate with our individual sensations and shared experiences of familiar surroundings. In the densely populated urban environment of Hong Kong, the artist offers us a quiet glimpse into the slow-flowing, languid moments of city life.

Born in 1991, Huen graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2013 with a BA in Fine Art. The young artist has exhibited internationally, most recently at OTA Fine Arts, Tokyo (2019), and Simon Lee Gallery, London (2018). His works are also included in notable private and public collections, including Sifang Art Museum in Nanjing.
