  • Catalogue Essay

In 1921, Cartier launched the Grand Tank Cintrée with an aesthetically pleasing long, slender, and gracefully arching case that perfectly sits on the wrist.

One of the most faithful release, practically a one-to-one re-edition of the 1920s Tank Cintrée, the present 100th anniversary edition perfectly executed with all the right notes from its origin were produced in 150 pieces only in 2021. The new edition features an warm off-white grained dial evoking vintage charm with elongated Roman numerals, a pair of blued Breguet-style hands. Furthermore, no “Swiss Made” designation found at 6 o’clock is a nice detail for connoisseurs. Powered by the ultra-thin JLC calibre 849 (Cartier 9780 MC), it’s a nice nod to its history of joint ventures between Cartier and Edmond Jaeger for their early creations.

Numbered 19 and a virtually “new-old-stock” example, this Tank Cintrée stands out from its other 149 siblings by a mile. Its rich yellow gold case has gained an incredible patina throughout, pulling it even closer to the charm of a true vintage Tank Cintrée from the 20s.

    Cartier

    French

With the Constitution of 1848 came a new standard for luxury in France. Founded one year prior by Louis-Francois Cartier, the house of Cartier was one of the first to use platinum in jewelry making. This incredibly expensive material became the stepping-stone for Cartier to experiment in form, mechanisms and attitude. It helped men move from pocket watches to wristwatches, effectively making the watch much more functional and prominent in a man's overall wardrobe.

Cartier did not only touch on functionality. Inspired by a commissioned painting by George Barbier featuring a black panther at the feet of an elegantly bejeweled woman, Cartier began incorporating wild animals in his designs—most notably, Cartier Panthère rings, bangle bracelets and watches. Yet it wasn't until the late 1960s that the house of Cartier debuted their iconic yellow and rose gold LOVE collection, which includes the famous bracelet that only a special screwdriver can open.
