  • Catalogue Essay

This pendant watch is extremely charming. Set with rose-cut diamonds, the dial features a floral design, while the reverse is designed with black enamel and a diamond -set flower motif to the centre. The edge of the dial furthermore features pearls of enamel on the outer edge.

The watch is cased in yellow gold and white gold, stamped with a French hallmark - an eagle's head. Fitting, since the movement is signed Cartier Paris. The case is furthermore stamped with Cartier hand stamped numbers.

Accompanying this pendant watch is a Tiffany & Co. white gold longchain studded with old-cut diamonds. It is apparent that the original owner was not only a transatlantic traveler, but an important collector with an incredible eye for design and style, being a patron of both important and storied jewelers. It is likely that she bought these two items of jewelry, one from Cartier Paris, and the other from Tiffany & Co. New York, choosing to wear both pieces together. We are delighted to offer the pendant and chain, over 100 years later since its original sale.

    Cartier

    French

With the Constitution of 1848 came a new standard for luxury in France. Founded one year prior by Louis-Francois Cartier, the house of Cartier was one of the first to use platinum in jewelry making. This incredibly expensive material became the stepping-stone for Cartier to experiment in form, mechanisms and attitude. It helped men move from pocket watches to wristwatches, effectively making the watch much more functional and prominent in a man's overall wardrobe.

Cartier did not only touch on functionality. Inspired by a commissioned painting by George Barbier featuring a black panther at the feet of an elegantly bejeweled woman, Cartier began incorporating wild animals in his designs—most notably, Cartier Panthère rings, bangle bracelets and watches. Yet it wasn't until the late 1960s that the house of Cartier debuted their iconic yellow and rose gold LOVE collection, which includes the famous bracelet that only a special screwdriver can open.
