  • Visibility is key in the striking photography of Campbell Addy, who has done much to advance the representation of Black and Queer Identity through his work. Renowned for consistently challenging the conventional perceptions of beauty and for articulating authentic and under-represented stories, Addy is one of fashion’s most exciting and in-demand photographers.

The diptych, Am I Paining You?, 2022, is explained by the artist as an exploration of sexual freedom and its limitations. In a scene both epic and intimate, lithe bodies are entwined in an orgiastic scene. Addy’s skilful play of light and shadow lends a three-dimensional quality to the flat surface of the photograph, conveying suggestive nudity rather than exposure. Addy views the diptych as a commentary on the oppressive standards and challenges faced by the LGBTQIA+ community. The evocative title prompts viewers to question why personal choices in love are met with condemnation, shedding light on the ongoing struggle for acceptance and understanding.

    Installation Shot: I ❤ Campbell, 180 Studios, London, 2023

Campbell Addy (b. 1993, London, UK) lives and works in London. Addy graduated from Central Saint Martins in 2016; in that same year he launched two platforms – Nii Journal (an arts and culture publication) and Nii Agency (a modelling and casting agency) – both dedicated to showcasing under-represented talent. Addy’s own striking imagery has garnered international success and awards including the 2021 Forbes 30 under 30 list and the British Fashion Awards in both 2018 and 2019. His first monograph Feeling Seen - the photographs of Campbell Addy debuted in 2022 to critical acclaim. In 2023 Addy collaborated with 180 Studios to create the major solo exhibition, I Campbell. Featuring a newly conceived set of images, original paintings and a short film shot on location in Ghana, I Campbell reflected a personal meditation on the artist's roots and inspirations. In 2023 The British Fashion Council awarded Addy the Isabella Blow Award for Fashion Creator.
