Catalogue Essay
Securing a top spot in the history of horology, Abraham Louis Breguet is with no doubt one of the most important figures that have ever appeared in the horological industry. Established in 1775, Breguet has patented and innovative some of the most important inventions in watchmaking, such as the tourbillon escapement, the self-winding mechanism, the perpetual calendar, the chronograph as well as the very first wristwatch. With that said, I am sure most would agree that Breguet is in fact one of the most important watch manufacturers of all time.

The chronograph is one of the most featured complications in a wristwatch as well as one of the most loved complications due to its complex movement architecture, its practicality, and its aesthetically pleasing registers in a traditional chronograph wristwatch. Invented in 1822, Breguet introduced the very first chronograph watch which was equipped with a second hand which deposited, as required, a miniscule drop of ink on the dial, which literally marked out the length of time.

In 2007, Breguet introduced a rare series of split-seconds chronograph timepieces limited to 7 pieces. Number 1 of the limited edition was offered at the Only Watch Auction in 2007 and was sold for USD 126,126. Featuring a beautifully finished Grand Feu enamel dial with a “red snail” tachymeter scale with two sunken registers, the dial alone is a complex feature to execute further with its signature painted Breguet numerals. Another interesting and unusual feature is the enamel tipped crown with a red “B” painted on. Powered by the manual cal. 535N, the movement features a straight-line lever escapement, a monometallic balance wheel with timing screws, and nonetheless a Breguet overcoil. The present example numbered 2 of a limited edition of 7 pieces is accompanied by the original presentation box specially made for this particular limited edition series. Once a property of a distinguished Asian collector, the present example is with no doubt a special Breguet timepiece to acquire and offered in superb value.

Breguet

Swiss | 1775
Established in 1775 by Abraham Louis Breguet, widely considered the greatest watchmaker of all time, the storied brand continues to thrive in the modern era, creating exceptional high-end watches as the Swatch Group's premier prestige brand. Some of the most important and lasting inventions in watchmaking are attributed to Abraham Louis Breguet, including the tourbillon, shock resistance and the use of hammers and gongs employed in nearly all minute repeating watches made since.

Eighteenth and nineteenth century Breguet pocketwatches are especially sought-after by collectors, and many of them were made for the elite of European society, including Napoléon and Marie Antoinette. Key wristwatches from the twentieth century include oversized dress watches, two-register chronographs, triple calendars and Type XX aviator's chronographs made for the French military and civilians.
